We anchored on the St.Lucie River last evening after a perfect day on the water. A large portion of the rim route follows Lake Ocheechobee shoreline so it is always better to transit this section on a calm day. It is much windier today and promises to be even more so tomorrow. I was finally able to pull out my guitar and play without an audience At our peaceful anchorage. The weather is not quite so nice today, it is more overcast with a little rain and wind. We arrived at the St. Lucie lock to see a dive flag and men working on the lock. We were told it would be an hour wait time but it turned out to be less. Lucky for us. Today we are in Stuart at a dock in Sheperd ... read more

Geo: 27.2002, -80.2555Shocking. We actually stuck to a plan! ;)We left Indiantown, heading eastbound in the Okeechobee Waterway back to Stuart. We backtracked through one lock, and under our lowest bridge to date. It is 54 feet – our mast height is around 51, but we say 52 for good measure. (Ha! No pun intended!)In Stuart, we grabbed a mooring ball right behind (sometimes beside – depending on the wind direction) our friends on "Simunye" (Pronounced: See-moon-ya, Meaning: “We Are One” in Zulu.)Simunye had been in Stuart for several days before us, and were ready to move on as soon as one more part arrived for their boat. Because there were no weather windows to jump to the Bahamas at that point, we wanted to move further south to get ourselves to a good position to ... read more

Our adventures with Gust O'Wind are over. We have sold our second home to a real gentleman from The Cayman Islands, Carson Ebanks, who intends to sail her there in March. She was ours for 13 years almost to the day. We bought her on a 'snow day' (schools closed) late in January 2001. She took us from Lake Ontario, through the Welland Canal, Lakes Erie, St. Clair and Huron to Georgian Bay where we spent 8 great seasons sailing out of our base in Wiarton around Georgian Bay and the North Channel. We learned so much about true cruising in those years and found many great anchorages. In October of 2009 we put her on a truck and shipped her to Deltaville, Virginia. That is where this blog began 54 entries ago. No need to ... read more

Another boating season is now behind us...this was our 4th season south; the weather was great...shorts and t's every day...swimming and golfing...but no sailing. A combination of circumstances conspired to keep us marina - bound for 3 months...family illness and contrary winds kept us from our goal to cross to the Bahamas. But, we had a great time with our boating friends in and around Stuart.. enjoyed a trip across Florida to visit with friends and had a great 24 hour visit with Kim, James Luke and Josh - the first night sleeping aboard for the two boys. Hopefully, next season we will have more of interest to share with you.... read more

This is just a quick update to give you a look at our new and improved "Gust O"Wind" after a major overhaul completed before we left the storage yard at Fort Pierce last week. Joe Gooch of Riverside Marina was the artisan who created the new arch (of marine grade aluminum) to replace our davits and solar panel mount which we had used for the last 5 years. He did a great job and was able to customize a number of features that we wanted included (bbq mount, outboard motor lifter arm, large solar panel installation.) We plan to hang out here in Stuart for another 5 weeks or so, whittle down our jobs list and enjoy the great winter weather - beautiful 25c most days so far, then we plan to cross to the Bahamas ... read more

We can now understand why a lot of cruising folk (especially seniors) retire from the anchoring - out life and tie up in a marina for the season. It is worry free - even storms are not to be feared - there is always someone with a taller mast nearby - you can't get lost or run aground or run out of beer! Although we are living the life of pot-luck dinners every Tuesday, aquafit and yoga, tv on the boat (Yes! - we bought a 15" flat screen which fits nicely on our chart table) - and Happy Hour 3 - 7 pm at Wahoo's Pub & Grill - we are not quite ready to surrender to this version of the cruisers' life just yet. The pig roast was a great deal - free - ... read more

First, we want to wish all of you a Happy New Year and hope that your holidays were pleasant and all that you wished for. As many of you know before we left Trumansburg we had thought that we would be in the Bahamas for Christmas, but that definitely is not the case. We mentioned in the last blog entry that we were stopping in Stuart, Fl to get our mainsail fixed. We have found it to be a very pleasant place to stay. It has a mooring field with great facilities. As a result we decided to stay here and continue to work on the numerous projects that need to be completed before we sail offshore. The marina here has a great laundry and shower facility as well as provides a bus service to the ... read more

This may come as a shock to many of you but due to circumstances beyond my control (Janice has tendonitis in her right wrist) I have been dragged kicking and screaming out of the engine room and in front of the computer. Were it not for the Dr. I would suspect a set up by my lovely wife. So anyway here we go. Last report you had was from our outstanding Thanksgiving dinner in St. Mary's. The Saturday after Thanksgiving we sailed on the tide and traveled a whopping two hours to anchor in the lee of Cumberland Island. This is one of the barrier islands of Georgia and in this case it has a very interesting history. 90% of the island is presently controlled by the National Parks as a result of a gift from ... read more
