Ready, Set, We’re Gone Our time at Caladesi State Park was very relaxing. Mary enjoyed a swim on Friday, but Saturday brought much higher seas and possible rip current, so she backed off. We visited in the morning with Phil and Karen, showing them some gunkholes around Charlotte Harbor and they introduced us to a dock at a McDonald’s north of John’s Pass. Mary visited the beach at sunset with a couple of ladies on a fellow boat and then retired to dinner on the PDQ. Quiet night, early bed….the usual Low tide was at 8:30am, but we were ready to go, so go we did. The only water around was what was just beneath us and that registered under 3 feet. Everywhere we looked we saw we saw sand and weedy shoals. But, we pushed ... read more

Geo: 27.3388, -82.5396From Gainesville we headed west towards the coast. Took a detour to Cedar Keys which is a very old quaint village on the coast. In addition to being an artsy community there were many homes which appeared to be seasonal. We spoke to one of the locals and she indicated that Cedar Keys is now like Key Largo was many years ago. Tarpon Springs was the next stop. Definitely a tourist town primarily because of the sponge industry. Further south is Dunderin - another quaint older village. We passed through Clearwater which is a maze of freeways and expressways and a very long and large bridge. Freeway traffic runs at 120-130 kph. Our last stop today is Sarasota. Tomorrow we head south towards Homestead which is just before the main Florida Keys.... read more

Today I explored Myakka River in earnest. The park shelters a now rare landscape called a dry prairie , the same ecosystem found in parts of Okefenokee Swamp (see ). During the dry season, it’s a traditional prairie with seas of high grass. The rest of the year it floods and becomes a swamp. Within the grass are groups of trees called hammocks. These also flood in heavy rain. This environment attracts birds and reptiles accustomed to a hot and wet climate. Hammock Nature Trail The grass is filled with wood ticks which carry disease at this time of year, so I focused on the hammocks. The park has helpfully created a nature trail which ... read more

This is our fifth year at Sun N Fun, a top RV resport, beautifully situated among Sarasota's wonderful attractions and restaurants. Obviously we love it. It is unique in having a restaurant, grill, bar with entertainment most nights; as well as mini and pitch n put golf, fishing in a few small lakes, wood working shop, lapidary shop, water color lessons and more. Something new at Sun n Fun is the "Spa!" It's brilliant logic to have pedicures, manicures and other spa services available at RV Parks! I peeked in the mystical sounds, sents and dimmed lighting made it all very Zen! We ate at the grill a few times for snacks and pub fair but had to take a walk after a value laden $9.95 buffet of stuffed cabbage (golumki), pierogi, kielbasa, sauerkraut, beet salad, ... read more

Here's a typical weekend from our Turtle Island, Siesta Key, Sarasota camp site. Needless to say, we love our week here. Now that this part of the vaca is over; are already thinking about next year! We always hit the Sarasota area timed for the annual Exotic Car Show at St. Armand's Circle on Lido Key (that's the one that leads to Longboat Key toward the north end). If it's St. Armand's at meal time, for us, the only restaurant choice is the Columbia. We especially love to split their famous 1905 salad prepared table side and a pitcher of red sangria. Some day we will try the white sangria! We're bringing some carefully chosen gifts from the Columbia's gift shop next door. The cool Sarah Palin sculpted caricature that has graced my face book page ... read more

This amazing Sarasota County park is right on the Gulf of Mexico, the furthest rig is less than the length of a football away from the sandy beach of Siesta Key. Two restaurants and a marina where you can rent boats sit right across Midnight Pass from this campsite. Sunning, walking and reading on the beach, shelling, conch blowers at sunset, fab dinner on the upper deck at Turtles, and off to a sunset Jazz event at Ca d'zan at the Ringling Museum! Looking forward to the weekend. An Exotic Car Show on St. Armond Circle on Long Boat Key where we will have lunch at our favorite Cuban Restaurant "Columbia." Juried craft show downtown on Main St., and possibly dinner and the Art Stroll in Towles Court tonight. Looking for a bike path! ... read more

So having spent over 2 months in Latin America we flew from Bogota to Miami for a holiday on our holiday in the Sunshine State. I'd been to Miami before with Office Angels three years ago and I was keen to stay near where we stayed on Ocean Drive, we found a place that does small apartments a couple of streets back and it was perfect walking distance to the beach. After a couple of days in Miami we hired a car and were ecstatic to have seat belts again and our lives firmly in our own hands to drive to Cape Canaveral to go to the Kennedy Space Centre. David was the most excited person ever, running down the walkway used by the Apollo astronauts to access their capsule, checking out the rocket garden, salivating ... read more

Just four more days and we will be in Key Largo. Unfortunately the weather outlook is calling for possible thunderstorms every day in the afternoon. Here in Sarasota we have been having those storms pop up regularly so we will probably get them as well down there. Hopefully we can get some good morning dives in though. More later. - Happy Diving... read more
