Well, what an interesting couple of weeks it has been. A shuttle launch and jobs at Disney World. I can definitely say that I wouldn't have had these experiences had we still been in Australia.
We'll start with the Shuttle Launch - what an amazing experience. I'd even go out on a limb and say it was the most exciting thing we have done since being in the States. Russ and I drove to Cocoa Beach to view the shuttle launch on the 7th which was the first attempt at launch. We found a great site where about 10 other groups were gathering and one car was broadcasting the happenings at Mission Control. After much anticipation the launch was deemed a no-go due to bad weather. Dissapointed, we walked back to the car but the night wasn't over for us yet. Russ and I, in all our wisdom, decided to go a different route home to see if there was a better site to view the launch. Well, there was and this move alone meant that we were sitting in traffic for 2 hours as it was obviously where everyone had been. We learnt our lesson.
2 days later
we were making the journey again and this time we would not be leaving dissapointed. We left home super early to scout out the area and we found a great little hideaway down an enbankment at Titusville. Russ was very pleased with himself as it was right on the waters edge so we HAD to go out and get him all the equipment a skilled fisherman needs. With his hand reel, squid and newly purchased light that sat proudly on his head (yes, sadly this is true), Russ was in his element. Unfortunately, I don't have any picture evidence of this but it was a very funny sight. He managed to catch 3 catfish so the night was deemed a success in Russ' eyes before the shuttle had even launched.
At exactly 8.47pm EST the shuttle launched and the nights sky was lit up as if it were on fire. Prior to the launch the sky had been pitch black but upon liftoff became awash with different shades of orange. I snuck a look back at all the spectators and it was quite a site seeing them aglow with orange and their mouths open in awe. I don't know
if anything can truly describe it but if you are ever in Florida and there is a shuttle launch happening you would be a fool to miss it. It is free afterall. I've attached 2 of the better pics for your viewing pleasure.
I won't be going into too much detail in this blog on the workings of Disney World (it is the internet afterall and google is man's best friend) but I will give everyone a quick update as to how things are going. Russ and I are the 2 newest employees in the Food & Beverage Department at the Magic Kingdom. The Magic Kingdom is the biggest of all the parks and Disneyland in California will actually fit into the Magic Kingdom's ground. It is also the busiest and has the longest hours so we have very late finishes (read, after midnight) the next 2 days at least. So far we have managed to check out MGM, Epcot and the Magic Kingdom on our days off and will most likely venture to Animal Kingdom in the New Year. Our next day off is Boxing Day but there is no way I will be setting foot in a
Entrance to Magic Kingdom
Getting pretty excited at this stage but it was premature as I didn't realise that we'd have a tram/buggy ride from the carpark to the monorail which takes you to the park. Disney Park on the 26th. I can only imagine the chaos which will be occuring and that is enough for me! Christmas is peak season believe it or not and I can certainly attest to that after working there today.
This pretty much brings everyone up to date with what is happening in our world which isn't alot at the moment as we eat, breathe and live Disney World.
Russ and I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a smashing New Year if we don't get to speak to you before then.
To my family, I am missing you heaps and we will be thinking of you today (your Christmas Day) and I know Russ feels the same way about his own family. It's our first Christmas without you guys in 27 years so it doesn't really feel like Christmas to us although having fairly warm weather is helping fill the emptiness a bit, we have actually had the air conditioner on the last few nights.
Until next time,
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
