We have enjoyed our 2 weeks here and have officially joined the senior crowd by learning to play shuffleboard and bocce ball. This RV resort is quite lovely with paved streets, which circle a man-made lake. There are lots of planned activities and we have enjoyed joining in, a new experience for us. The people are extremely friendly and laid back, so playing golf as a group was a lot of fun. Today we decided to take advantage of some cooler weather and to explore Naples a bit. We went to "Tin City", and - well - it was a tin city, a crowded bunch of shops and restaurants along the harbor housed in a tin-roofed emporium that was once an oyster processing plant. Lindsay was hoping to score a loud Florida shirt, but when he ... read more

After two travel days and 720 miles, we arrived at our RV Resort in the Naples area. It's really nice with many resort amenities: pools, putting greens, tennis courts, shuffle board, bocci ball courts, exercise room, laundries, and an auditorium style function hall that holds 180. The resort has 500 or so sites. Some have so called "park model" trailers (think double-wide) and the rest are either motorcoach sites or trailer sites like ours. You can buy a trailer site here for about $130,000, but since it costs about $2000 per month to rent, we would be dead before we broke even. The place has many activities, including dinners, dances, aerobics classes, golf putting tournaments, and lots more even stained glass artwork making. So far, we like it a lot and will probably return next year. ... read more

Jungle Jen and I are spending 5 days in Florida, visiting family and naturalizing, before heading to Ecuador. We spent the day at Corkscrew Swamp in Collier County and enjoyed large numbers of passerines including seven species of warbler (Prairie, Myrtle, Palm, Black and White, Pine, Common Yellowthroat and Northern Parula. We also saw a Painted Bunting, Great Crested Flycatchers and Baltimore Orioles). The highlight was watching a Musk Turtle eating a dead praying mantis! Five days until we fly to the Galapagos Islands!!... read more

This is a return visit to Silver Lakes RV Resort situated on Route 951 (Collier) between Naples & Marco Island. We love camping on concrete slabs. The heated pools and hot tubs, great landscaping, water views, a well organized lending library, a golf course, and nearby attractions & restaurants are among the amenities. Rookery Bay Natural Estuarine Research Reserve has excellent exhibitry. We wandered the "snail trail" through the swampy terrain. The trail is new and signage is being developed. It's a tribute to many volunteers and fund raisers that people have access to and can experience these fragile and rare areas up close. We love to go where kids are out and about learning - especially about science - on field trips. The Rookery is a real gem for school groups. We'll wait until next ... read more

March 24 Day 17 Marathon to Little Shark River Traveled 46 miles It’s time to head north. The winds are out of the east so it looks like we have a window to cross Florida Bay and go up the west coast of Florida. We had the sails up and pushing us at 6 mph towards our destination by 8:30 AM. Within 2 hours we were out of sight of land. I hope our navigation skills with the gps gets us to where we want to go. We were able to hoist the genniker in the afternoon and keep it up for about 3 hours. It got a little breezy as we passed Cape Sable on the SW corner of Florida. We were at our anchorage at Little Shark River in Everglades National Park by 4:30 ... read more

I left Louisiana on January 3rd to go to Alabama because there is a park that I wanted to check out for future reference if I want to stay long-term somewhere on the Gulf Coast. The park where I stayed (not the one I was interested in) was fine although quite deserted because it was just after Christmas and it was too cold for most weekend campers to get out. I stayed a week and left there for Live Oak, Florida and to the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. I don’t know how many folks realize that the song “Suwannee how I love ya, how I love ya…….” Actually refers to the Suwannee River. This park is on the Suwannee River and is a lovely place. It is a venue for a lot of great ... read more

Our last full day in the Naples area was rainy - but compared to the lack of utlilities and snow and sleet and frozen / snapping tree branches that our relatives in New York and Vermont describe; we feel lucky and really needed a day to do some housekeeping and "work" related projects. We zoomed up to Naples in the afternoon. Our first destination was the Naples Winery in Tin City, where we tasted and bought a few tropical fruity wines. Then over to ultra fancy and beautifully decorated Third Street and it's criss cross of "Avenues." We found some wonderful MacKenzie-Childs items in Zazou at the Third St. Plaza. We were surprised that the Plaza had lost more than half of its upscale tenants since we were there last Christmas. We toaste Naples with Bloodies ... read more
