I'm lying in bed thinking how great it is that my arm fits perfectly across my eye socket to block out the light that has interrupted my sleep when I am made to realise that unfortunately my arm does not also cover my ears to block out noise when Lou calls from the bathroom 'Time to get up d'. Lou boots up the laptop to check our flight confirmation from Miami to New Orleans and sees that everything is fine. She then checks the New Years Eve flight from New Orleans and sees that the flight date has changed from December 31st to January 6th. I call British Airways to find out what is going on and and they tell me that the flight on the 31st was double booked in our name at which point ... read more

We arrive at the Cadet hotel in Miami it is just around the corner from Ocean Drive which unfortunately puts that dreadfully bland song by the Light House Family into my head every time I see a sign. The Hotel is a modern boutique style, clean lines, Egyptian cotton bedding, white walled, fresh and stylish. The staff cannot do enough to help us during our stay from sorting out my wireless connection to unblocking the toilet, a job no one should have to do on Christmas day. One block up and two blocks across from our hotel was Lincoln Road a pedestrianised street full of fashionable clothing stores, art galleries, book shops, restaurants and bars. Our favourite haunt along here was Divine, a red lounge bar serving cocktails, hookah pipes and Lebanese style cuisine. We felt ... read more

New Orleans - Miami Saturday 4th October (Day 40) We got up in the morning and had one last stroll past the restaurants and tourists shops. I bought a few items for people back home and Vaughan bought a white t-shirt, as he was finding it too hot with all the black-coloured shirts he had brought with him. New Orleans was so sunny and really vibrant - it was full of bright colours and action and music. We didn’t want to go, but unfortunately it was time to get sorted out to make it to the airport. Miami was calling, and we had plans for the evening there already. We made it back to the hotel to check out and called a taxi to take us to the airport. The flight was fine and for once, ... read more

We arrived at the Four Seasons Miami on Brickell Avenue, and quickly learned that Brickell rhymes not with Cornell but with pickle. This is one of the many satisfactions of travel, the chance to learn little things that you probably would never have learned any other way. It's the same way I learned that in New Hampshire, Berlin rhymes with Merlin, and that in South Dakota, Pierre rhymes with cheer. The Four Seasons lies in the business district, which is decidedly un-busy during the weekend. But that suited us fine. It made the weekend more like a getaway for just the two of us. And it made it easier to park. One thing you have to give due consideration to in South Florida is whether your parking space is at risk from falling coconuts. We were ... read more

Miami & The Caribbean

We weren't overly impressed with the whole South Beach Miami culture, everything is extremely overpriced and the locals are a bit pretentious . Because of this we didn't hang out at the clubs and instead enjoyed the relaxation of doing absolutely nothing but eating, drinking and chilling out on the beach. This was just what we needed after a hectic trip around California. We also managed to organise our 5 day cruise in the Caribbean... I would definitely recommend cruising to anyone as you get such a good deal with all the food, entertainment and soft drinks for free. On our first cruise night we both went to the main club onboard and had far too many sambucas... probably not the best idea as a choppy day at sea was on the cards leaving me and ... read more

I knew the Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas was large, but I was not expecting it to be so big. Travel With Me After a wonderful night at the Intercontinental Hotel - Miami I was more excited about our cruise. My husband , mom, dad, MIL, step-FIL, aunts, uncle, and cousin were able to check in at the front desk pretty quickly. We made sure we had all of our documents in hand, which made the process smoother. With our room keys in hand (floor 6) and our new iteniarary we had to change ports to avoid the tropical storm we raced to the escalators to our home on the seas for 7 days. I thought it was wonderful that they took a pictures (or two) of each couple as they boarded the plan. ... read more

Here are few quick notes and pics of us tonight we are staying at the embassy suites hotel, So far we jammed up an elevator with our giant pile of duffle bags, we weren't sure if it was the weight or size...... then we did some sort of Laurel and Hardy put a bag or person out and then leave it on one floor going back down and then up. Just a few minutes ago the fire alarms were going off and the water has been off for several hours.......but really it is a beautiful hotel. And the beds are allot softer than they will be for us tomorrow. We just had a lovely gab fest about what we will do this time and great ideas for projects in future. I am so inspired ( ... read more

Hi, We are on our way!! Thank you for all, the well wishes on the blog! And thanks to everyone who came to our bake sale in Canyon yesterday. It was a huge success! We are on the plane now to Miami where we will stay overnight and leave for Haiti in the morning. I thought this would be a good time to write more about our trip and our team. I am not using the ‘royal’ we. There are 6 of our 11 person team members on this plane. I hope that everyone on the team will have a chance to write on this travel blog and I can’t speak for them but I can write a little about the team as a whole. I am sure if you are reading this you are wondering ... read more

The plan Still on the plane so I will keep going ☺ As I wrote before, bringing a medical team to Belle Anse has been our goal since we first created Sionfonds. So it has been 4 years of planning. By planning, I mean first we start talking about it, then we set a date, then we asked for help from many, many great people who shared their knowledge and helped find resources and gathered funds, then we get postponed and then we try again and find new folks who want to go and more funding and then at the last minute people drop out or join in, we keep raising funds until the last moment and we are off. This trip relies heavily on the expertise of many, many, people and groups who have gone ... read more
