Days 38 & 39: Wichita Falls, TX to Defuniak Springs, FL Left Wichita Falls at 7:30 and made good time to and through the middle of Dallas. What a confusing mass of interstates! 532 miles later, we stopped in Clinton, MS for the night. Poor Milo was bored to tears. On Sat, we got out of camp about 7:30 headed for home. It had started raining during the night and rained off and on as far as Mendenhall, then it became steady rain, sometimes really heavy. Just found out that Mobile had 13" of rain yesterday. Traffic was REALLY heavy on I-10 - - both ways. Westbound traffic going into the Mobile tunnel was backed up for at least 8 miles, and just barely moving. After all the problems Bob has had with his tire he was keeping a close eye on it. So far so good. It was raining when we had planned to leave but we waited about 45 min and took off. The temp was cooler and it didn't warm up that well today. The wind was blowing 10 to 15 mph all day, but it was a tail wind most of the day. This was nice. Before we left Chipley we met a young couple (Lily 26, Eric 32) who were on their way to New Orleans. They were making their own way, and were camping a lot. They even had a small guitar with them. Leaving Patterson Louisiana we had a beautiful drive along the coast and drove through New Orleans. We were surprised it looked as good as it did. We saw some distruction but not as much as we expected. The worst part was the far eastern edge right before we went over the bridge. New Orleans has lost a lot of income from the media stories making it sound bad. Our interest was in Florida so we kept going east on Hwy 10. This is a great Hwy. but all you see is trees trees trees. DeFuniak Springs was a delightful surprise.
