We had an 11 hour stop over in Washington so decided we should hop on a bus into the city and check out some of the famous sights. After the ¨incredibly friendly¨ welcome we received from the immigration officer (we both decided he must really hate his job, the miserable b!) we set foot outside the airport into 4 inches of snow and -4 degrees (ish) temps. Brrr! It would seem that the special friendship Britain shares with the States also extends to the weather!
We spent several hours walking around the city, seeing Capitol Hill with Capitol House on top (not much of a hill, mind), the Washington Memorial, The White House and the Lincoln Memorial. We also had lunch at The Old Ebbit Grill, as recommended by Rich, although this was after a slight de-tour, thanks to Karen´s directions! Great burgers though!
In a final panic, we managed to find the bus stop to catch a bus back to the airport in time for the next leg of our journey to Rio (after having various bottles of suntan lotion, etc, confiscated by the over-efficient US customs). We were then held up for over an hour as there were problems
with the navigation system on the plane which needed to be sorted.
