Tuesday AM we availed ourselves of the complimentary breakfast at the motel and then headed out for our hike on one of the Connecticut sections of the AT. The trailhead for this hike was only about 5 minutes from our motel, so we got a fairly early start this day. Our intent today was to hike the Lion’s Head Trail to the AT and then on to the summit of Bear Mountain, the highest summit (though not the highest point) in CT. The initial Lions Head trail intersected with the AT after only .75 miles and the namesake point of Lion’s Head was only another .25 mile up the AT. This was a steep mile, gaining almost 600 feet with the last bit a very steep rocky hand over hand climb to the top of Lion’s ... read more

Preface: We stayed in Lebanon/Willimantic, Mansfield Center was just the closest city listed on here :) After getting up and prepped for the day and eating a delicious host breakfast, I realized that the center of town across the street looked just like Stars Hollow!! For those of you who don't know what that is, its the town in Gilmore Girls (and also Pretty Little Liars-both mild obsessions of mine!). I was freaking out a little as I took pictures and shared with my fellow GG fangirls. We had route meeting and Carly and I decided to ride together for a date day. Honestly, I don't remember much about this ride day in particular and may have to come back and add in more details later. I believe we had lunch in a park right near ... read more

Build Day! Which mean van jams on the way to the site! Of course for K2C, that means Winnebago, because, what else is there? I do love these moments and will miss them, regardless of how much we hate piling into that van, especially in the hot summer sun. We arrive on site at a park where we are greeted by our kind and dedicated AH lead Adam, who is excited that we are here today! He explains how a few years ago Bike & Build came through and helped clean up this park, create seating, and blaze the trail. But now, looking around, its all severely overgrown--the seating is barely visible due to high weeds, overgrowth along the fence, and supposedly there is a trail in the woods, though it is currently unrecognizable. Adam is ... read more

Another hard wood floor wake up with lots of alarms going off all at once echoing through the high ceilings of the gymnasium walls. This is Bike & Build life. Since it was laundry night last night, I have the fun task of being sure all my clean clothes are folded and packed away efficiently in addition to packing away the normal sleeping bag and thermarest. This morning I get to slip into comfy shorts and tank top, rather than wiggle myself into my shams while in my sleeping bag. We eat left over pizza for breakfast, and though I usually am picky with left over pizza, I don't hate it this morning. I do thoroughly enjoy sitting in a circle while eating breakfast all together. We have route meeting a ways away from where we ... read more

We are Here :)

We woke up to a nice surprise today--the heat wave broke! We also received a nice delivery from a local alum of DD coffee and bagels--K2C runs on Dunkin'! While packing up the trailer, Carly found the plastic roadway blockers to be an ample place to pretend to nap, lol. On Bike & Build, everything and everywhere looks like a good place to nap. We packed up the host, trailer, and vans, bid our farewells to the home office staff that had joined us the past few days, and had route meeting. It was the usual confusion of who is riding with who, and I asked NJ if she would like to ride together. She warned me that she was in a funk and may not be a ton of fun to ride with. I told ... read more

Musings and observations. The weather these last 24 days has been amazing. When I left CT it was sunny but with a fresh chilly breeze. That continued from Rome to Athens which didn’t encourage sunning by the pool but was perfect weather for touring. Some mornings were a bit overcast but before long the sun was shining bright. I enjoyed a full moon, some brilliant sunsets and cloudless star filled nights. On the day we sailed into Venice there was a slight drizzle. As we passed the crowds at ST. Mark’s and the Rialto Bridge I decided to stay on board and nurse my lingering cold. Late May seems like the peak season in the Med even through I know it gets worse in summer. Crowds everywhere. Standing room only on the water busses and when ... read more

September 4th The weather is still warm and sunny here in Piedmont, so we found a few swimming holes and cooled off in the clear water. I wish I could tell you where these wonderful little spots are. But then they would be so crowded that no one would be able to enjoy the peace and privacy. What I will say is that I really liked Sam Baker State Park and the Black River. September 5th-6th Loaded up now and headed out, first going east to get to the Highway 67 and turning south toward Poplar Bluff. The weather was a bit on the muggy side with high humidity. But we stayed comfortable with the air conditioning, which we ran mainly for the comfort of the cats mind you. At Poplar Bluff, we changed direction to ... read more
