New Haven, CT… where pizza is a serious business
Published: December 28th 2011North America » United States » Connecticut » New HavenPepe Pizzeria opens at 11.30 am and almost immediately an attempt to eat in the premises will cost one 50 minutes. That is because people from all over travel to Pepe’s for their “tomato pies”- thin crusts of pizza dough one can eat with or without cheese but always loaded with home made tomato sauce and one’s pick of toppings. To tell the truth, the stuff is good. Realizing that pizza was not meant to be a piece of bread always loaded with heavy cheese is good news for any lactose intolerant person, but aside from that, the “pies” are tasty – with big chunks of garlic in the sauce and pieces of bacon cooked to perfection. Waiting in line is not fun, but no one ever seems to leave. It is a 50 minute wait ... read more

Published: August 4th 2009North America » United States » Connecticut » New HavenDiary entry for the last 3 days - photos to follow We diverted off our main route - to head South East to a beach resort just up the coast east of New York - to Madison and Clinton, Connecticut. Due to extreme weather again we stayed an extra day with cousins Bernie and wife Raquel. Carol had a cycle and swim with Raquel whilst I had a relaxing time chatting about family stuff with Bernie. Over the last couple of days we have eaten in a genuine '50s diner, visited the Harley factory (closed due to bad timing - arrived on a Sunday) We stayed in a B&B which was in it's own setting of woodland and lakes. The owner's dad was in charge on arrival - bit of a lad. Left us to choose ... read more
Welcome to lush New England
Published: June 9th 2009North America » United States » Connecticut » New HavenWe took the train on a fairly non-descript route from NYC to New Haven. Then we drove on a country road route through beautiful, lush countryside. We'd forgotten the meaning of green with our drought at home but this green we've never seen much before. It was lovely to take the slow route. We stopped at a Dairy Queen for an ice cream with mobs of junior baseballers, then in Mystic, a sea town for a wander along the streets. In a suburb of Providence we spotted an authentic looking italian restaurant. It sure was as there was no menu! Anna was not so impressed with her bolognese but my matriciana was fine. Bedtime found us in Seekonk, MA for a wonderful sleep.... read more
Una notte con la mia cugina a l'Università Yale
Published: January 26th 2009North America » United States » Connecticut » New HavenOn Friday, I drove down to New Haven to hang out with my cousin Cricky for the night at Yale. I hadn't seen her since I visited last December when she held a party. Cricky, her boyfriend and myself all went out to eat at a Thai restaurant close to campus shortly after I arrived. Prior to this I had never eaten Thai food, but I'll try anything at least once. Other than the shrimp, I'm not really sure what else was in the Pad Thai that I ordered but it was excellent. Cricky and Will steered me in the right direction, because I was having a difficult time choosing between things with names like "Khanom chin namya" and "Pad kee mao". After dinner we went back to campus and hung out at Cricky's place ... read more
Hey! Just wanted everyone to know that I'm safely home in the US of A. I'm getting settled into my dorm in New Haven for my summer teaching job. I'm so sick of packing and unpacking, it's ridiculous, but I'm grateful for the morning jetlag, so I can get up and get things accomplished before breakfast. Just so you all know, there are more blog posts coming down the pipeline on the Joe/Sarah blog. We still have to share the end of Madrid, and a surprise city that wasn't expected. So be looking for that in the coming days. Otherwise, I'm back in the states now, so feel free to give me a call and we'll catch up! Cheers! SFech... read more
My (not so) Long Journey Home
Published: June 15th 2008North America » United States » Connecticut » New HavenAnd so ends of my European experiment. I would call it a success, on the whole. Apart from housemates who were not the most inviting of people (they were nice and easy to get along with as long as you were perfect in everything you did) and living in a place where the dollar went nowhere, I made some great friends from all around the world, had a good job with people who were welcoming, easy to get along with and fun, got to live in the financial capital of the world in a foreign country, and was able to see a large chunk of Europe in just a few months time. My last day and 2 nights in London were a chance to catch up with people one last time and say my good-byes. It ... read more

Although I have spent the past five months preparing for this journey - as each day passes I grow a little more anxious and nervous about my trip. I was selected to travel with a group of teachers form around the United States with the Asia Society. Our destination: China. Which part, you ask - all of it. 32 days of intense travel. Departure is slated for July 7th. As of now I am busying myself with all of the loose ends that accompany an extended trip away from home - buying supplies, stopping mail, converting money. It is all stressful and exciting at the same time - which Moleskine journal will truly be the best for my journey - blank, ruled, squared? Shoes - one pair for 32 days - not fair, especially since that ... read more
Email updates from Ilene
Published: January 25th 2007North America » United States » Connecticut » New HavenRobert here . . . Ilene's not able to spend as much time posting to the blog as she'd like, so I thought I would share some of what she has written to me by email. (Don't forget to look at entries previous to this in case you missed the pix that she did post.) She wrote: Vietnamese class has been shifted to T, F, S, S, so it will be tomorrow before I see my tutor again. And this time it will be conversation, not pronunciation. I listened to the lesson again last night (the digital recorder came in handy). I've done interviews the past two days with women I met on the 2005 trip. One is the daughter of the tailor who just married her Canadian boyfriend. She says I speak more Vietnamese than ... read more
