Lindsey and I got up and hung out at Jai's house for a relaxing morning. When we finally got our stuff together we headed for Estes Park. Estes Park was a beautiful mountain town at Rocky Mountain National Park. We went to the Visitor's Center when we got there to check out what the town had to offer. Lindsey found a brochure for an American Wilderness Tour so that we could REALLY see the Rockies, off the beaten path. Well that was an understatement. We got into the truck, which was HUGE, and proceeded to climb a mountain in it, [View Full Entry]

Distance: Mills Lake - 5.35 miles, Black Lake - 9.8 miles Rating: to Mills Lake - moderate Despite what I’ve said earlier about snow in the high country, I couldn’t resist heading back up to Rocky Mountain National Park again. Since it was still only mid June, I knew there would be snow on the ground. What I didn’t anticipate was just how much snow would still be around. For this hike, my dad and I had planned to make the long trek to Black Lake in the glacial cirque below the jagged peaks of the Continental Divide. Unfortunately, there was [View Full Entry]

Distance: 7.7 miles Rating: moderate It’s generally safe to say that if you head up to the high country prior to July, you’re still going to see a fair amount of snow. I was aware of this, but I decided that I’d had enough of hiking around the foothills. So, my dad and I headed up for our first hike of the year in Rocky Mountain National Park. Unlike previous years, I actually had a National Parks pass, so we were able to venture into the park rather than search for hikes around the perimeter. At this point, the temperature down [View Full Entry]

Talk about off the beaten path ... wow, we found a really neat bed and breakfast; Red Feather Ranch B&B and Horse Hotel, up in the Colorado Rockies in Red Feather Lakes, near Fort Collins. The innkeepers were wonderful and made us feel so special. This was truly a memorable trip. We hiked from the back door into the Roosevelt National Forest with our two pooches. I did not know that this is only one of a few national forests where you can take your dogs. There was another couple staying at the B&B with their horses. We saw them on [View Full Entry]

Motorhome News from North America 41 13th April - 23rd April 2007 The Great Canyons of Utah and the Colorado River Snow covered the ground when we woke at Colorado National Monument. Visibility was down to 50 yards and thick grey clouds threatened worse to come. We left early to avoid being snowed in, wending our way down to the valley floor, heading for Utah, 100 miles across wide open flats, out beyond Grand Junction into the sparse grasslands, a sea of white as far as the eye could see in the brightening sky, the first rays of morning sunlight striking [View Full Entry]

Well, even though it's almost June there is still skiing to be had. Matt, Brandon and I did a backcountry day on Rollins Pass just above the last ski train tunnel before Winter Park. We spent the night in a tent right by the car and due to the recent high temperatures we began our trek at the early hour of 4:00. Our descent was from Radio Beacon Mountain and it was sweet. The top was a large open area that lead down down into a steep coulior. Enjoy P.S. I also put two pictures from Dave's Wave on the south [View Full Entry]

May 23 Day 9 Durango to Silverton to Teluride to Grand Junction, Co. Durango 9:30 and out the door ready for our next adventure. I take highway 550, the San Juan Skyway which mostly follows the Animas river up the canyon. We climb about 3,000 feet and reach the Molas Pass at 11,000 feet. These ancient mountains were created by a huge volcano. When the volcano exploded it sent huge amounts of rocks into the air. The vacated and sunken area is called a caldera and is a huge valley surrounded by majestic mountain soaring 13,000 feet above us, the rim [View Full Entry]

The journey takes some 53 hours in total and there is only one train per day. Reece: Waking up early, eager to see the mountains that were now no longer cloaked in darkness, we set off down scenic Route 34 towards Estes Park. (P.S. We got the cinnamon buns. They should not be, and probably are not, world famous.) Even before arriving at the Rockies we were greeted with a spectacular drive through the Roosevelt National Forest where a winding road led us through a canyon following the Big Thompson River. The sides of the canyon were so tall and so sheer we couldn’t even see the sky until we made our way out. Arriving at the [View Full Entry]
