Well, even though it's almost June there is still skiing to be had. Matt, Brandon and I did a backcountry day on Rollins Pass just above the last ski train tunnel before Winter Park. We spent the night in a tent right by the car and due to the recent high temperatures we began our trek at the early hour of 4:00. Our descent was from Radio Beacon Mountain and it was sweet. The top was a large open area that lead down down into a steep coulior. Enjoy P.S. I also put two pictures from Dave's Wave on the south side of Loveland Pass.... read more

May 23 Day 9 Durango to Silverton to Teluride to Grand Junction, Co. Durango 9:30 and out the door ready for our next adventure. I take highway 550, the San Juan Skyway which mostly follows the Animas river up the canyon. We climb about 3,000 feet and reach the Molas Pass at 11,000 feet. These ancient mountains were created by a huge volcano. When the volcano exploded it sent huge amounts of rocks into the air. The vacated and sunken area is called a caldera and is a huge valley surrounded by majestic mountain soaring 13,000 feet above us, the rim of the old volcano. I get out of the car and find out the outside temperature is 43 degrees. Duhh, the snow should have been a clue. I exchange my flip flops for shoes and ... read more

The California Zephyr is the 2,422-mile train line that connects Chicago and San Francisco it is the most picturesque rail journey in the States and is marked by contrast. Travelling out of the suburbs of Chicago it heads through the Great Plains and then winds its way into the Rocky Mountains in the heart of Colorado before finally heading out to the Pacific coast. The journey takes some 53 hours in total and there is only one train per day. To break the journey up and to provide ourselves with a fabulous opportunity to explore some of these remote yet beautiful landscapes, we planned to stop at Fraser-Winter Park, a ski resort village high up in the Rockies, and Salt Lake City, our gateway to Yellowstone Park, Deadwood and Mount Rushmore. We boarded the train at ... read more

The Journey to the Rockies

Reece: Waking up early, eager to see the mountains that were now no longer cloaked in darkness, we set off down scenic Route 34 towards Estes Park. (P.S. We got the cinnamon buns. They should not be, and probably are not, world famous.) Even before arriving at the Rockies we were greeted with a spectacular drive through the Roosevelt National Forest where a winding road led us through a canyon following the Big Thompson River. The sides of the canyon were so tall and so sheer we couldn’t even see the sky until we made our way out. Arriving at the entrance gate to the park Caitlin jumped at the opportunity to get an annual pass that allows one to go to any national park in the country. At the Falls View visitors center we were ... read more

glorious!

Caitlin: Well folks, allow me to apologize in advance—for I am lacking the beautiful diction and syntax that Reece possesses. Let’s be glad that it is he who is studying English at the fine State University of NJ and not myself…. That being said, Reece does think that I take better photos….so I suppose we make a good team. Make sure you keep your eyes open for when he publishes his Kerouac-esque chronicle of our adventure. Monday was a glorious day all & all. Waking up in backcountry is an experience that rivals all. Anywhere. For those who have not experienced backcountry living….do it! Relieving yourself of all the stimuli that you think you need….think you like…think you want- is liable to be one of the most philosophical & spiritual experiences you can have….but it is ... read more

Hi Everyone, I have really big news, the weather is finally started to work in our favor- Yippeee!! It's still a little cold at night but it's manageable. I am writing you all from the Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, Colorado. The past couple of days have been very eventful. On Thursday we spent the day in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was a lovely city with extremely friendly people. Everyone that we met was so talkative and interested to hear about where we are from and what our trip entails. The city of Cheyenne is pretty famous for its long standing history of Union Pacific trains so we meandered through the historical district and checked out some of the trains that were on display. Then we did some shopping, with a stop at the Cowgirl ... read more
