Geo: 39.2508, -106.293 We started Thursday with a little medical emergency. I was having a large floater in my right eye for the last 2 days. Also I could see thousands of tiny dots when I looked at something light colored. We drove to Salida and found an eye doctor. They took pics of my retina and he told me that it was part of the aging process, that all people usually get this between 60 and 70. Its called macular degeneration. He said the floater would probably sink out of sight in about 2 to 6 months. How fun. Getting old is hell! So we left Salida and headed to Leadville. We went over the 11,900 foot pass. It wasn't very dramatic as all of the area went up gradually and you couldn't really tell. ... read more

Friday started out as a lazy day. We decided to sleep in, have a late brunch and simplify things a bit. We decided against both a hard nature hike and the more "suburban" Beaver Valley hikes. Going to Leadville had been on our list of things to do earlier in the week, so we revisited that idea and made the one-hour trip south. Leadville was the center of Colorado mining ages ago, and has a scenic narrow gauge train ride that follows a former route to a mining camp. Leadville also hosts the two highest mountain peaks in the U.S., Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive, both over 14,000 feet in elevation. Leadville is a VERY different place from the resort towns 40 miles north - clearly a town that was once more prosperous, but still very ... read more

Trail Ridge Rd was open and we were on it by 6:45am. We wanted to avoid the weekend crowds. TR Rd is the highest paved road in North America. It travels along the spine of the Rockies with the highest point over 12,000 ft. There were some good mountain views and the skies were blue, but it was cold and windy at the top. In the afternoon we left RMNP behind and traveled southwest to Leadville, the 2 mile high town. It was a scenic drive with ranch land, brown rolling mountains sprinkled with golden aspen, snowcapped mountains in the distance and several large lakes and reservoirs. We’re in the middle of ski country now. Leadville was a prosperous mining town of 30,000 during the late 1800’s. Now it’s an antique haven, tourist town and outdoor ... read more

The sun crept slowly across the Arkansas River Valley. To the west, the tallest range of mountains in the Rockies, The Collegiate Peaks, were illuminated by the morning sun rising over the eastern hills that we were bivouacked on. A blue sky greeted me this morning on a hike up the hill. I took in views from afar of barren-topped mountains, fog, and two hot air balloons rising in the calm air, which was quite the opposite of the night that had just passed: a classic monsoon. Storms rolling in slowly over Yale, Harvard, or Oxford Mountain, with lightning, and some incredible wind. All this rocking us in intervals every hour or so; almost enough time to set up our faulty tent with no rain tarp included. ----------------------------------------------- "It feels like we've been out here ... read more

Brett came to visit for a couple of days-- I convinced him (ie guilted him into it) because first, it was my birthday, second, since he's now job hunting, I was afraid it would be one of the last times he'd be able to come out on short notice, and lastly (and probably most importantly for him) because I paid for his ticket. He's never been camping before, something most of my friends seem to find incredible. I've always loved camping and being outdoors, and thought it was time he tried it out. Memorial Day Weekend sounded like the perfect time. I had to work Saturday and Sunday, but had Monday and Tuesday off. I figured that would be better - less campers. It seems like everyone in the state likes to start their camping season ... read more
