when i was 20, i took my first overseas trip ever. to Vietnam. trial by fire. i had just finished a hellish semester with 4 brutal finals, working at the university loading dock, and was now in the market for a backpack and traveling clothes. i gave myself all of a night to pack. as in, an overnight, when i should have been sleeping. perhaps you can relate to this, fellow travelers and students of life. i'm making a very conscious decision here not to tell you what i packed on that maiden voyage. it's embarrassing, and involved lots of cotton and pretty much every bad packing decision ever made. 4 weeks later, my pack was emptied and searched at LAX, my scruffy smelly bewildered self standing by helplessly as new immigrants, hippie couples with newly ... read more

Boarding my first Greyhound bus at 1 pm was an eye opening experience for me. I should have, but didn't, expect that it would be full of all kinds of weirdos and well... losers. I hate to be so judgmental, but it really was a thorough collection of the US's trashiest kinds of people. During my bus ride I observed a lot of oddities and just plain gross behavior, and I started to compile some rough estimates of the people of the bus as a whole. The more I observed and heard, the more I realized that riding a Greyhound bus is a comedic gold mine for stand up comedians. There's just a ton of funny things about the typical Greyhound ride! For instance: There will be anywhere from 1 to 3 normal people on the ... read more

Ok, quick recap of my time with C.Lowe, Nate Dog! and Lora from the 4th of July to the 7th. Watched a lot of TV on their huuuuge 47" flat screen, played with Nate Dog!, had some great one-on-one time with both C.Lowe and Lora, took short bike rides through out the neighborhood, found some nice trails, and snacked my face off. We went to Kat and Dave's house for a 4th of July cookout. Dave cooked up some AWESOME food on the grill, including 2 chicken breasts that Lora and I had marinated over night in the fridge. I was so impressed with how well they were cooked -- absolutely perfect! Tender, juicy, great flavor, no charred parts, and over all delicious. I simply cannot cook chicken that well. The rest of the meal was ... read more

May 18th. We break camp along the Yampa River early in the morning. Today we plan to travel toward the grasslands of northeastern Colorado before heading to Denver, where Leigh's cousin Ruth lives. We travel east, passing through Steamboat Springs, a ski resort area, where once again we encounter snow. We soon see high plain vistas and cattle ranches. We stop for the night in Fort Collins. With no camping spots available, we stay at a modest motel. The next morning we continue on through what is called short-grass prairie. Fairly bleak countryside with towns few and far between, dotted with the occasional forlorn windmill.... read more

Tomorrow I start a journey that I logistically planned for over a year but which I have been planning for in my heart much longer. In 2001, I went on a pilgrimage to Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago and ever since I have been yearning to return. That day is finally here and I am filled with excitement. No one can truly understand what the Camino is about until they have walked it for themself. It is more than just a backpacking trip, more than just a hike and more than just cheap tourism. It is a sacred journey that symbolizes life itself - birth, death and rebirth. Many pilgrims are called to walk the Camino when they experience a major event in their life - the death of a loved one, the loss ... read more

Although the sky was very overcast and threatening, the temps were mild and the roads dry as we started out on Snow Ridge Road, our last scenic route through southern Wyoming. Wyoming is a beautiful state with so much wide open land, fresh air, wildlife, desert, high plains, prairie and mountains. We've had good weather until the last couple of days so really can't complain. Frank's friend Chuck was quite funny when he asked what were the three most important things we had learned about Wyoming. The correct answer according to Chuck is take every opportunity to stop for gas, take advantage of every bathroom you see and the third is that wind makes all the difference. He was absolutely right. Gasoline and bathrooms are few and far between out in the desert and mountainous areas ... read more

The Colorado lure continues as I've moved on to Red Feather Lakes, home of the Shambhala Mountain Center where meditation, reading and simple work tasks are the way of life. For six(ish) weeks I’m living in a community of hundreds as a fall volunteer given the task to take down canvas tents in preparation for the winter. Colorado winter at 8,000ft is too harsh for the tents to withstand so each spring and fall volunteers show up to take on the challenge (it is, however, quite unchallenging so far) of setting up or taking down the small housing tents and the large community gathering tents. The center owns over 600 acres of undeveloped, stunning subalpine land with a maze of trails and paths throughout. The evenings and weekends offer ample freedom to explore, wander and find ... read more

Good afternoon! It's Sunday in Colorado. After our girls night out we had to get up quite early, because Carmen and her guests had to fly back in the morning. After a delicious German style breakfast (boiled eggs, bread, jam, fruit, coffee... yum) we all left. Regina and I had packed the car again and are heading north still. Thanks Carmen for letting us stay! Not far after Denver (a beautiful view: on the right the Great Plains, on the left the mountains; btw Colorado is the "mile high city", because it is 1600 meters high) we stopped at Fort Collins. Here is Colorado State University. We had to stop here, because Regina's parents have studied here back in 1973. We walked around campus, and believe we even found the apartment complex they lived in. Righ ... read more
