I've often heard and used the terms fast-food and junk-food, but I've never really understood them. Till now. The way I'm traveling, makes it sometimes quite hard to eat properly, especially on the bus. So I'm left with all the McDonald's lookalikes, and worst (BTW, I still want eat in actual McDonald's, for reasons I no longer remember). And really, it is fast. In a standard unfamiliar to me. A whole bus goes in a fast food franchise somewhere in Indiana, we have only 15 stop, and everybody eats and still have time. Then another bus gets there, and dealt with as swiftly. But, of course, what we actually eat is total junk. Tough meat, dead vegetables, unrecognizable sauce. And everything with fat cheese and dry bacon. But the worst things are the beverages. They give ... read more

So this is sort of the opposite of a travel blog... Sean and I have been living in Denver for 2 years and a couple of days. I think we have officially settled in here. Need proof? Check out the cute little house and very cute big puppy we just got. We got the house in late December and immediately started working on it. Very quickly we were off to Michigan to visit with the Browns. After meeting our beautiful new niece, Sage, we returned to Colorado for the New Year. Within a week we had our first house guests. My dad and Uncle Fred drove out to Denver to help us with the house. They worked very hard all week and our guest bedroom is now like brand new. A few days after they left ... read more

Denver, Day 1 Arrive at Denver Airport; go get rental car and drive to downtown Denver. Walking Tour; ...Union Station - actually very beautiful. ...Walked down the mall (16th ave) ...Tattered Cover Bookstore - impressive (bought a gift here for a friend - almost didn't find it.) ... This tour got me drunk (which I should have known). ...went to the Denver Art Museum drunk. Enjoyed it very much. There was non-generic room with lights projected on the walls and unconventional surfaces - I sat in a bean bag chair. I made a postcard for me and a boy ... read more

Liz blogging: I have done the monotonous drive across Kansas countless times- from listening to Hangin’ Tough on a walkman to driving it with friends for impromptu winter break ski trips. Mark and I started our trip across by nearly Jim-Icenogle “O’dark Thirty” standards. Even though the drive is ten hours of practically nothing but wheat fields, churches and cattle transportation trucks, we both enjoyed the drive more than the other long haul segments we have done so far. There wasn’t a lot to think about- just point and go. For those who have done the drive, you can probably relate to the building anticipation of the first glimpse of the mountains after passing through Kanorado, CO. I kept promising Mark a great view which starts first from the south and then the outlines of the ... read more

Denver seems to like us, as she has dumped over a foot of snow in the past 24 hours in a vain attempt to keep us here. Fear not, dear readers, for we shall not be thwarted by mere slush. Do we not hail from Alaska and Montana? We come from hardy stock indeed (thanks mom and dad). So early tomorrow we will be on our way, off on our big adventure, the Bear and Button show extraordinaire. Are you ready? I hope so, because you are going to be amazed at the “awesometisity” of it all. Till we arrive in warmer lands…. Danielle (& Oliver) ... read more

As I packed all my things away in preparation for a three month stint abroad, I began to ask myself the inevitable questions - "Do I need this", "when did I use this last?" Some things were easy to part with - the ragged shirts from high school, dirty socks, bank statements. Some brought on a sense of nostalgia - letters from old girlfriends, press releases, prior travel journals. Things got tougher when I boxed up the cell phone and the laptop. My connection to the world seemed lost. I began to realize how compulsively I checked the time, the weather, sent text messages for no reason, checked my e-mail. I kept reaching for my pocket and wasn't sure this was going to go so well. Maybe I should have got an international cell plan. The ... read more

Waiting for the flight back to Columbus tonight at Denver International Airport, at least it's a direct flight back, but we'll be in close to midnight tonight. We had a great weekend but after yesterday, we slept in (relatively speaking) and opened The Cheesecake Factory in Boulder for brunch. We walked Pearl Street a bit and after checking out from the hotel, headed south. Western Denver We went through Golden, Colorado which only has about one useful thing in it - the Coors Brewing Company, which was not much to look at. The old town is a bit interesting, but did not appear to be worth the stop. The whole western side of Metro Denver seems to be Mexican, there are just tons and tons of them. We went to Colorado Mills nearby and half the ... read more

Click on the link above to see a news bit about some of my students getting free clothes from a charity. Click "play video" after the video box loads on the right side of the page. I'm glad they are taking care of the necessities... but they missed half a day of school to do it...hmmm. Getting clothes vs. learning how to read... both necessities I guess Well, I've reached week 7. It's been quite a ride. -Our staff went on an amazing retreat into the mountains before school started to do "team building" activities and a bit of planning - I LOVE my staff! Everyone is so young-spirited, helpful and friendly - I actually hang out with them outside of school :) -I got pneumonia on Week 3 and had to take 2.5 days ... read more
