Oct 22 Saturday The High Drive
Today I got on 26th street next to the Hotel and took it Southwest till it became Gold Camp Road and then climbed up and up to follow the Gold Camp road where it goes around a very scenic route and through 2 tunnels on a very narrow road. It was paved then turned to gravel and got so rough I started to say heck with it and turn around but it smoothed out a bit and became much more narrow. So much so that you had to watch where you met cars coming down as you had to meet at a spot where you could go by each other. To add to the mix there were bicycle riders who weren’t particularly worried about cars from either direction. It was a very scenic drive and well worth the hazards and when I arrived at a large parking lot there was the choice of continuing down towards Helen Hunt Falls and out of the park or to take the High Drive farther and steeper up the canyon. I pondered it a bit till I saw a car go up so I knew if a car could
make it then it couldn’t be too rough with large rocks etc. So I drove up the canyon again on the High Drive and there were some spectacular views with hair raising hairpin curves. The road was very narrow and one way only but bicyclist considered themselves exempt from the law and would come rolling down at you along the way. There were dirt piles bulldozed up along the way down with dirt in case someone’s brakes gave out or they lost control and then they could head on into the dirt piles instead of going off a cliff. Farther down the hill women walking their dogs in the road added themselves to the mix as well. All in all it was a great drive with many a spectacular view that I stopped at to take pictures. It really was a great day and I had a great time.
The photo program would not upload any pictures so I am just going to publish this without any and move on.
