The Independence Pass corridor was probably once a summer hunting ground for primitive man in prehistoric times. In more recent times, the Ute Indian people inhabited the Roaring Fork Valley and undoubtedly roamed the Pass and surrounding peaks and valleys in the course of their seasonal travels and hunting trips. Such sites as the Ice Caves near the Grottoes recreation site may even as served as primitive refrigerators for the preservation of food. As white settlers began moving into the Colorado Mountains during the mid-1800's the Utes were gradually forced onto reservations and were finally removed from the western slope in the 1880's after the Meeker Massacre. In 1873 the Roaring Fork Valley was first surveyed by the Hayden Geological Survey and was praised in the Survey Report for its great mineral potential. In 1879 the ... read more

In 1879 the first prospectors arrived in what would soon become Aspen and determined the area contained large deposits of silver ore. For the next 14 years Aspen’s fortunes rose as it eventually produced 1/6th of the nation’s and 1/16th of the world’s silver. 1879 Hayden Geological Survey reports are published indicating promising geologic formations in the Roaring Fork Valley for the presence of silver. First prospectors, crossing difficult mountain passes, explore the area for silver and winter over to protect claims on what will become one of the richest silver lodes in history. Henry B. Gillespie arrives in Aspen to examine a mine and travels to Washington, DC to petition for a Post Office. He lays out a town and calls it Ute City. Prospectors are in Ashcroft. Prospectors discover the Independence Gold Lode on ... read more

Well I am back in the USA for the next 10 weeks and I all ready miss Asia, and I am all ready planning my next trip out. I got screwed because I did not book a cheap flight from Bangkok to LAX before 90 days. if you miss 60 days you really are going to have a hard time finding the cheaper flight deals that are out there. The main reason that I wanted to blog something is that I am getting a lot of comments that I have lost weight so the Asia Diet that I was doing was working now the real test trying to keep it off or better yet lose even more. I think the key is to eat at home and to keep the fast food to a minimum my ... read more

Aspen Don’t get fooled by the bland brick building and simple Victorian architectures around town. Aspen is very opulent; the epitome of luxury, style, and grace. Strolling down the streets, big fashion names that fill Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, Fifth Ave in Manhattan, Avenue Montaigne in Paris, and Bond Street in London are well represented here. Arts Galleries that cater to the strangest tastes are as common as Toyota in Tokyo. I never heard the “organic contemporary style” term till I opened the Aspen Home Design magazine. The style, according to the magazine, should include classic, clean, and simple sinuous lines. It incorporates pieces crafted from reclaimed wood and recycled materials. Furthermore, the style uses fabrics that utilize vegetable dyes. I would remember that for future reference. Either I was way behind with my vocabulary ... read more

This morning we left Salida and eventually ended up in Montrose to the west but not by the most direct route. We wanted to see Aspen which is quite a way north of Salida, so we took a rather circuitous route which included Highway 82 through the mountains and across the Continental Divide at Independence Pass. We've seen many mountain passes and crossed the continental divide numerous times but this particular route was spectacular to say the least. The east side of the pass road reminded me of the Going To The Sun road in Glacier national park. It snaked along the side of the mountain, to an elevation of 12,095 ft at the summit, had many switchbacks and provided incredible panoramic views down into the valley. It was a gorgeous day with a temp of ... read more

Leadville is surrounded by 2 of the highest mountains in CO and I got to see the sun turn the peaks pink this morning when I was walking the dogs! We spent the morning touring the National Mining Museum. I didn’t realize that so many consumer products contain minerals that must be mined. Leadville had all kinds of mines at one time - silver, gold, lead, zinc and copper. Small boom towns sprung up all over the area. In the afternoon we did a short version of a driving tour of former mines and mining communities in the area. It took us above Leadville and even on a dirt road that reminded us of Alaska. Can’t say there was a lot left to see just piles and piles of mine tailings (dirt leftover from mine operations). ... read more

This morning we visited the Maroon Bells a much photographed set of red mountain peaks near Aspen. By the time we arrived at 8:30 am the parking lot was almost full and many, many photographers were surrounding the lake to photograph the Bells. The aspen were past peak here, but the area was still beautiful. I spent an enjoyable hour photographing. We left the crowds behind and drove to Ashcroft a restored mining town not far from the Maroon Bells. The road paralleled Castle Creek and was not heavily traveled. The aspens were beautiful and the temps were comfortable which made for a very enjoyable trip. Ashcroft was fun to photograph and after Frank had made some rock collecting stops we headed west away from the Aspen area. We stopped for the night at a CO ... read more
