The Golden Gate Bridge.
Our first sighting was when we drove across it to get to San Francisco. We spent a few days exploring San Francisco. It was a great city with super big hills - I know we walked them.
Before we knew it we had cross the Golden Gate Bridge and we had arrived in San Francisco. It was a lovely sunny day so we went to for a walk to explore the bay and Fisherman’s Wharf and get tickets for Alcatraz. It was a bit of a distance but nothing we couldn’t handle. Lucky we did get our tickets the day before for Alcatraz, because they were sold out for that day, and there was only a few places left for the trip the next day. We caught the earliest we could, trying to avoid the crowd as much as possible. We had a date; 9am tomorrow we were going to Alcatraz. A quiet night in the hotel was really what we needed since tomorrow was going to be a big day.
The next day we got up early and walked a different way to the wharf. It was a long hard walk as the hills were so steep! On our way we walked down Lombard St, otherwise known as the world’s crookedest street.
The Water Front
Near Pier 39, San Francisco's touristy area. It had 8 hair pin turns within a 400 metres. It would have been terrible to live on the street and try to get into your garage. It was a long walk back to the port to board our ferry to Alcatraz but we made it with 20 minutes to spare. When we arrived that morning all tickets were sold out for that day and the next. It was crazy.
We took the ferry across; it was a short smooth ride and before we knew it we had arrived at one of America’s most famous prisons. It housed some of the most notorious criminals of the time including Al Capone and Robert Stroud. Very few managed to escape, because of being on an island surrounded by shark infested water. Apparently in 1962 three men had escaped. They sailed away on a boat made of rain coats, andthey were never seen again. Alcatraz has always been a bird sanctuary and continues to this day, their West Gulls were huge.
Our Alcatraz visit filled most of the morning. We decided to explore down town San Francisco, but to combat the MASSIVE hills we would took a trolley up the hill.
Me at Lombard Street
The world's crookedest street. It was old and rattly, it was a bit fun but a bit of a rip off at $5.00 each. We headed to Union Square and China Town. From there we walked to Alamo Square, again it was a long hard walk, up hills and down. Alamo Square was an area were there are rolls of Victorian Houses. It is very popular on postcards and most famous for featuring on the opening credits of "Full House"!!
The next day we spent some time at Fort Point. It was a great stop for photos of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. We took a few more photos, the only problem was the fog was very heavy, so much so that you couldn’t see very much of the bridge at all.
We left San Francisco that afternoon. We were off to Yosemite National Park.
