Craig and I are exhausted. It’s been a busy few days. Our day trip to Rosarito Beach in Mexico today was cancelled, but Craig and I aren’t too upset as it gives us a chance to just relax. Poor Craig has been fighting a bad cold (possible bird flu - Craig) for the past few days and hence hasn’t been getting much sleep and has been feeling pretty crap, so he’s getting a much needed sleep in right now.
We went to San Diego Zoo on Monday, which was just incredible! They had such an amazing amount of animals on display, some of which we didn’t even know existed.. Besides the animals, they also had this really cool Gondola ride above the park that provided amazing views across the zoo & the city. Definitely the best zoo Craig and I have ever seen. It was so huge that we didn’t get to see everything in one day. But we saw all the animals that we wanted to see. It was a very tiring day as the zoo was really hilly.
On Tuesday we went on a baseball stadium tour of Petco Park. I actually enjoyed myself, although I’m not
sure if that enjoyment will last through another ten or so baseball stadium tours. The park is fairly new, opened in 2004, and the amount of thought that went into making it a reflection of San Diego was pretty cool. We got to go into the dugout and the press box among other areas.
We also did a bit of shopping on Tuesday. I finally managed to get myself some shorts, after walking around in hot jeans for a week. Craig managed to pick himself up some Tiger (shoes) for just $50 Aust, and he’s looking forward to getting heaps more before coming home as they’re about $150-$180 in Oz! I got myself two pairs of sandals for $35 Aust which was really cool.
On Tuesday night Craig went to the baseball, but I decided not to go as I was going last night. So I took myself off to see a movie (Salt - it was crap). Craig went to see the San Diego Padres vs. the LA Dodgers. He was barracking for the Padres but unfortunately they lost 2-0. They won last night though, 6-1. It was very exciting! They had fireworks and fire coming out
the top of one of the buildings when they won. The stadium was packed both nights because a lot of Dodgers fans came down from LA. I think the best thing about the baseball is the food - I had a hotdog and Cracker Jacks (caramelised popcorn) and Craig got some cotton candy (fairy floss). We also shared a bag of peanuts, which you shell yourself and then just drop the shells on the floor. Craig found the chants at the baseball very funny. Two of the main ones - “Beat L A” and “Dodgers suck”. Extremely inventive.
Yesterday Craig and I shared our first heated exchange. We were going to Seaworld and decided to walk there as it was only about a half hour walk from our hotel. Well, Craig’s directions took us on a scenic route, and the walk actually took us an hour and 40 minutes. And then when we actually got there, there was a freeway inbetween us and Seaworld, so we had to walk even further to get to somewhere where we could cross the freeway. I was wearing my new sandals which should have been OK for a half hour walk, but after
an hour and 40 min walk they gave me a huge blister on each foot that is literally 5cm squared and goes under the ball of my foot. Very painful.
We were sort of laughing about our adventure by the time that we got there, but then we discovered that we couldn’t take food inside. We had packed our bag full of food including a jar of peanut butter, a huge bread stick and heaps of other stuff. We tried to hide them in our backpack, but try hiding a breadstick - they found it and told us we couldn’t take it in. I was like, “Well that’s a shame, but can’t be helped so let’s just throw it all out and go inside” but Craig was really annoyed and refused to throw it out. So I cracked it at him and yelled “Well you have two options - throw it out or take it back to the hotel!” He eventually threw it out and apologised for being “such a bitch” about the food hahaha. So we were both a little sour by the time that we got into Seaworld, but we eventually came good and enjoyed our day.
We saw Shamu, the famous killer whale. That was amazing. We also saw a Sea Lion show (with a little otter that ran out on stage - it was so cute!!), and a Cirque de la Mar show. I got to feed Bat Rays and sea lions, and got attacked by an aggressive bird wanting my fish when trying to feed the sea lions. I also got to feed flamingos. They had a really cool polar exhibit with penguins, polar bears, beluga whales and walruses. They also had a couple of rides which we got absolutely drenched on. At the rides, they had little machines set up where you could pay a quarter to squirt the people going past on the rides, and Craig enjoyed doing that.
My poor Winter skin is sunburnt something shocking. I’m putting on sunscreen, but probably wasn’t as vigilant as I should have been initially and I’ve been red since the San Diego zoo.
Off to Phoenix tomorrow!
