Today is our only full day in San Diego, which is a shame as we both LOVE it here and there is loads to do! We decided to go to a beach for the day as we saw loads from the train on the way here, and were recommended to go to La Jollla as it has interesting wildlife. The place was absolutely beautiful with cliffs and little beaches nestled in amongst them and we found one which had some rocks a few metres out with a seal on it! To quote 1 girl that we heard: ''the sand is so soft... like angels''. Well I'm not even sure I know what an angel feels like, but the beach was pretty nice. There were about 3 seals playing in the surf really near to the beach ... read more

This has been a highly anticipated day; sea kayaking down in La Jolla.. This is a very picturesque beach town just north of San Diego with a fantastic beach. There are caves along the coast and when the conditions are right you can go into the caves. When we hit the beach the waves are slightly higher than the 3 ft. and we watch the kayakers try to launch into the waves. We are trying to get pointers so that we are not one of those that capsize in the breakers. After a very short instruction we launch into the ocean and hope for the best. I'm in the front and when the first wave hits us the nose of the kayak is pointing to the heavens and I am flying off the seat and hoping ... read more

...rough night for Reubs with it ending up with us watching cartoons at 4 am. I just don't get Pokemon! Complaining now of tooth ache...suspected he was just misreading the pain from his ear and sinuses but the pain medications were not assisting. One good aspect to the start to the day was the travel insurance company emailled us e-tickets for our return home, Qantas on the 15th so only one more night here before we can get home and in particular get the little guy fixed up and comfortable at least in his own surroundings. Only downer, and not a significant one, is that the flight is at 11:30 pm so long day and long night - but it will get us home. If Reubs was 100% the delay would not be an issue but ... read more

...started the day out in Los Angeles after a good nights sleep for the patient. Only woke once for pain meds at 1.30 am and then went straight down again... Up at 7am and decision time... what to do! Travel agent is on New Zealand time, travel insurance is in Singapore (we think) so co-ordinating contact and planning is proving just a little difficult. Big ups to the travel agent, Fiona, she is doing an awesome job to help out. Situation is that the boy still ain;t up to travelling and both the doctor and the travel insurance people are advising against travelling for another couple of days and on top of that he is still in some discomfort. Decision made - we simply cannot travel. Having said that it will be frosty day in hell ... read more

Ray and Carol McCorkle from the Good Luck Sams in Colorado Springs came for a week's visit. They have a 40 motorhome and could not stay in this park, which has a 35 foot maximum. The park was built for small rigs and tents and has narrow roads and small sites. They stayed in Escondido, which is about 18 miles from here. They discovered San Diego rush hour on one of their return trips. We took them to La Jolla and San Diego. The cove at La Jolla is amazing with it rocks, pelicans and seals. In San Diego, which is about 25 miles south, we had great lunch at Old Towne, a vintage Spanish village with lots to buy and eat. We also drove to the end of Cabrillo Point with its great views of ... read more

Alright, I know it's been quite a while since my last blog but I hope you can all understand. So I have let two whole months pass without a good blog (except for the one my sister wrote in late December) and there is much to tell. For those of you who do not know, Maria's mother entered the hospital yesterday to have a brain tumor removed. I ask for your thoughts an prayers as she begins surgery this week. We are hoping the procedure goes well for her and she can come home quickly and fully recovered. Changing themes, my work is going well and I am really becoming comfortable as an ESL teacher.Right now my days are long, from 7am - 12pm, then 4pm- 830pm, but I have a nice long lunch break at ... read more

There is something about the West Coast that distinguishes it from the East Coast - whether it is the ease of which one can eat sushi, pho, thai and fish tacos or the laidback lifestyle, the two coasts are worlds apart. The West Coast is such a beautiful place especially SoCal with its beaches and sunny weather (let’s not mention the traffic issues). The mere fact that English is still the predominant language of choice in this part of the US is also a huge plus - this fact alone is going to make our next trip to Miami very difficult to look forward to! Heading out West, we had no plans other than to chill out and perhaps play some golf. We stayed (2) nights in Santa Monica and (6) nights in San Diego (Shelter ... read more
