Sacramento, CA (Nov. 10-13)
Published: November 14th 2011North America » United States » California » SacramentoGood travelling so far. Two days from Olympia, WA and we are resting for a long weekend at our daughter's place in Orangevale, CA. I've taken a few walks around here and have included a few pictures from along the American River. Yesterday we went down to the Nimbus Dam fish hatchery and saw many big salmon coming up the fish ladder.... read more
The Amtrak train trip from Seattle to Sacramento took a relaxing twenty one hours. And the trip to Seattle added another three hours to the front end of the trip to make for a full one day to travel the entire distance south. But it isn't speed to the destination I am seeking, it's the trip itself. I had lunch as we ambled through Portland with two rude and odious women, not related but of mother and daughter in age separation. They spent lunch talking and swearing to each other, and more than once talked about me in the third person. I tried to say a few nice words to be polite, but they were not really worth the effort. I got the last laugh, however, because they asked about the time to their destination - ... read more
Well, Blogs are like pictures and will never be able to capture the true nature of things. Thus far I have failed at keeping this "blog", if I can even call it that, updated. This is mostly due to the fact that I have not touched a computer until now. I have seen, experienced, and had many thoughts over the last 2 weeks and know now that I will not be able to express them here, or anywhere, in words or photos. None the less, here's a bit to wet your palette:... read more
Sacramento definitely not a desert
Published: March 24th 2011North America » United States » California » SacramentoSacramento would not have been on my list of places to visit while in California. Visiting with my cousin is what has brought us here, but Sacramento has been a pleasant surprise. The weather has been rainy most days, so it has limited our outdoor activities. The weather is unusual for the amount of rain at this time of year. We had planned a shorter amount of time here, but this is also a place where we are picking up mail and packages. There was a delay with one item and we needed to wait for it before moving on, so we settled in and waited. I’ve discovered how much I enjoy spending time in an area and just being there for a while. Rushing and seeing things is a different way to travel and certainly ... read more
The Homeless Chickens of Fair Oaks
Published: March 21st 2011North America » United States » California » SacramentoHorrid Weather, Wonderful Friends We are into the fifth day of our California road trip...and the weather is getting steadily worse! It is actually colder here than in LaConner. (42 when we were out earlier!) We drove down through Washington and Oregon in sun/rain for two days and hit snow in the mountains in Oregon/California, but it did not stick to the ground, thankfully! We got in front of the storm in California, and had sun til mid morning on Friday, when the downpours started. Last night we had wind gusts here around 50 mph...! The good part has been seeing family and friends along the way. We stopped to see Jason and Gabriel in Edmonds and Luke at work on the way through Seattle. We got to my cousin Pam's home by dinner on Thursday. ... read more

Happy New Year..
Published: December 31st 2010North America » United States » California » Sacramento..and what a great year 2011 is shaping up to be for us. Today has been spent tying up all the loose ends - well that is true for Andrew who tends to wait until the last minute to do things, but since I already took care of all that stuff weeks ago in an organized fashion, I have been trying to busy myself with other stuff... running, laundry, pacing about and trying to make time go by faster. All so typical. We will be headed to the airport in just about 4 hours flying first to LAX then on to Brisbane. Have a toast for us at midnight as we will likely be on the tarmac or possibly just taking off. We will be arriving in Australia about the same time most of you will ... read more
Two days in the Wine Country
Published: December 28th 2010North America » United States » California » SacramentoWe've enjoyed some nice wines in the last couple of days. Yesterday we went to the Napa Valley with Ricky, Rose, Kat and Ricky's sister Agnes. Napa is quite a stylish area, you should really belong to a wine club to enjoy the private tasting rooms, fortunately Agnes is a member of a number of different wine clubs so we got to experience some wine tasting in some exclusive tasting rooms. We visted three wineries - Rutherford Hill, Franciscian and Robert Mondavi (the spelling may be wrong), the wines are a liitle different from Australia, as a rule the reds are a bit lighter and they don't do too many whites. One of the main varieties is a Zinfandel, it's a light red that varies from quite drinkable to "let's try the next one". They also ... read more
Christmas Day Update
Published: December 25th 2010North America » United States » California » SacramentoEleanor and I had a good flight and arrived in San Francisco a little ahead of schedule, the customs and immigration wasn't busy so we got out of the airport quite quickly. When we exited Rose wasn't there so I grabbed a coffee, a few minutes later we found her and in a short time we were in the Lexus with our nephew Andy as the driver, headed for lunch at a Filipino restaurant. At the restaurant we were joined by the Delacruz clan (Ruby, Peter, Ronald, Lita etc etc) and Eleanor's friend Malou. Lunch consisted of a selection of traditional Filipino dishes plus some fried chicken, calamari and paella. It was quite good and there was plenty of it. After lunch we drove to the Haight Ashbury area in San Francisco. It's a bit of ... read more
Donna & I decided we would take the AMtrak from Lodi to Sacramento to meet John & Patrica Baldridge for lunch. The ride was about 40 minutes, so we thought we should have a drink-Donna had a red wine and I had a beer. John & Patricia were there waiting for us. We had a nice lunch at the Delta King and then we walked around Old Sacramento for a few hours. The weather was nice and it was very enjoyable. We took the train back to Lodi and guess what, it was raining in Lodi. We walked back to the house in the rain. It was exhilirating .... read more
California and North up I-5
Published: November 16th 2010North America » United States » California » SacramentoCalifornia, North on I-5. November11 – 15, 2010 We put in a couple of long days after leaving Albuquerque,NM. Friday we drove across the Mojave Desert quite close to the place where Dan did his field training. Also went right by Edwards Air force Base where they land the space shuttle if they cannot land in Florida. Of course, now they cannot even get it in the air!! It was an interesting day. Most of our drive was on I-40 again, a 4- lane divided hwy. across the desert. As soon as we crossed the Colorado River into California we noticed quite a deterioration in the road surface - it really needed to be repaired!! Also, when we ran out of Freeway we noticed that work had been begun on making a 2 lane road into ... read more
