Sacramento

We’d wanted to do Sacramento as a part of a camping trip to Folsom Lake. But all campgrounds seemed full during the memorial weekend. Instead of sitting at home, Sacramento is definitely a better option 
So, we started from home around 7 am. We were there by 9 am. We first hit Old Sac (that’s slang for Old Sacramento). On the way to the garage, a cop stopped us to say that no cars were allowed in for 2 days as there was a Jazz festival going on. In any case, downtowns are best seen on foot. So, we parked the car just opposite to CA State Railroad Museum. We headed right there. Entrance fee $8.00. I definitely felt it a little pricey for the place (it looked small from outside). So, we dropped it for time being. We were just walking by. We came near waterfront along Sacramento River. We took the water-taxi for $6 a person (almost an hour long ride). It stops at 2 places. We preferred a round trip. It was a nice experience.
We had done rafting on American River last year. I had no clue it joined Sacramento River here. American River (as I was told by the taxi driver) was treated there and used for drinking purposes. The water quality is so good.
We checked up the local visitor center and got informed that the Railroad Museum was the main attraction. My husband wanted to do it now and so we headed back that way.
As we were walking along the waterfront, we could not image how the road would be if not for all this Jazz crowd. The whole place was sounding so lively. There were a lot of road shows as well.
Once inside the Railroad Museum, we were thankful that we did not miss it. It turned out to be very informative. The place is actually a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. They must have a couple trains there, actually. Pretty impressive. We took the 1.30 pm tour to know more about the North Pacific Railroad. There was a short documentary in their large screen theatre as well. We ended spending a little over 2 hours there.
We had lunch and reached just in time at the State Capitol building. Right in time because, they have the last tour at 4 pm. We searched for over 10 minutes before we found a parking lot (intersection of P & 13th street). We had to search a while for the correct entrance as well.
We got an hour tour of the place. By 5 pm all the windows and doors started closing. With a final look at the Governor’s office, we left the place, or should I say, palace?
There were practically no local stores around. So, we crossed the tower bridge into West Sacramento for a yoghurt smoothie at the local Safeway. With nothing much to do (all state parks close by 5 pm), we headed back home.
Folsom Lake, some other time!
