From 2019: In order to beat the Valley heat, we are once again driving over to Pismo Beach on the central coast of California. So, not only do we love the cooler weather, our little Labradoodle, Lexi loves it too. And we get to eat at some of our favorite places, like Ember in Arroyo Grande, since they have an outdoor patio dining area where Lexi is welcome!!! The mostly boring drive of about three hours is tolerable. But summer lodging rates on the beach are somewhat inflated, though not as bad as the Monterey Peninsula or further south in Santa Barbara. I guess we should not complain! And most all of them charge extra for having even a small dog in the room. But once we get here, we enjoy ourselves immensely. While the cooler ... read more

It appears 2020 is the year of the road trip. We already did ours, a road trip with Lexi to Scottsdale, AZ last March. It seems a decade ago. But we did enjoy the nice weather, a Giants Spring Training game, Portillo's Chicago beef, vegan pizzas, and a loooong drive through Palm Springs, SoCal, and the desert to get there. For the 4th of July, this seems to be the consensus: A new study found that Americans will take an estimated 36.8 million url=https://www.travelpulse.com/gallery/destinations/summer-2020-travel-music-themed-road-trips-across-the-us.htmlroad trips over the Fourth of July weekend. According to travel data company Arrivalist, road trip travel will be down 11 percent from the 41.1 million people AAA predicted would hit the road in 2019, despite the Independence Day weekend being the biggest road tri... read more

Not only has the weather been hot for several weeks now, but just to make matters worse, our almost new (less than three years old) refrigerator decided to take a break, or just break. The technician said the Sears Kenmore refrigerator is made by LG. And LG compressors have been failing at an alarming rate. We are thankful for the extended warranty. But I wonder who is going to take over Sears Home Services when Sears finally declares bankruptcy? Anyway, we decided, since we are going out for most of our meals, to take a road trip over to the Central Coast, and stay a few nights in Pismo Beach. And, of course, we are taking Lexi with us. Last year, on her first trip to the beach, I thought she was going to dig to ... read more

Geo: 35.1568, -120.668We got up early, finished packing, got coffee and started our drive south down 101. The plan is to spend two days driving south, one day in San Diego and then two days driving north again. This will be Arya's longest roadtrip yet so we're hoping she tolerates it well. Especially since we are planning to break up the driving with frequent stops. Our first stop was in Morgan Hill. Really it was just a drive by but Chris wanted to see how the progress on our new home was going (its being built). It finally has a roof we discovered!Next stop was Carmel-by-the-Sea. Its a favorite place for Chris and I. Usually we stay overnight but today we just walked around downtown for an hour. We visited our favorite store, the Cheese Shop. They ... read more

Geo: 35.1568, -120.668You'd think we'd remember: 1. How cold the coast is with the marine layer. California may not have a drop of rain but they have a cold moist layer of crap that freezes your butt off and keeps everything damp for days. 2. Don't get buzzed when you have to pack out the next morning. Hadn't even pulled into the campground yet to set up and a member of the San Luis Obispo Wheelers MC pulled up and told us about a gathering in a couple of hours at a bar downtown. It had been a rough ride with the crappy roads (isn't Cali a rich state?) and the massive gridlock. What should have taken 4 hours took over 6 and I was a little grumpy but my guy needs his guy time. I'm ... read more

A traveler sees what he sees. A tourist sees what he has come to see. - G.K. Chesterton On most holiday weekends, we don’t venture out that much. This most likely has to do with Dave and his disdain for all those Americans who take advantage of a long weekend to crowd the roads, hotels and fill restaurants with their noisy children. Americans in general have very little vacation time and would be better off to take their cue from some Europeans, Aussies or Kiwis who seemingly have months off at a time. But we’ll save that rant for another time. We threw touristic caution to the wind and climbed into the car and took off for the coast of central California, to tell tales of wine, dancing, extreme opulence, The Big Lebowski, and of ... read more

Tuesday 08 March Avila Beach and Pismo Beach Drove down to Avila Beach from SLO. Avila beach was very beautiful and had Full hookups for RV's for $45 a night. I'll bet there are many people spending their time in a "parking Lot" RV park for the same money who could be staying here and enjoying this really beautiful view. The fishing ships unload here and there is a fish market as well as a restaurant. And a very nice little picnic area. Not much else though. Still.............it really is splendidly scenic. After checking out Avila Beach went over to Pismo Beach. They have a pier there and a boardwalk as well. And ........of course......... a great view of the ocean. They did have a cheapo restaurant there that I wanted to check out. It has ... read more

We headed out to Pismo beach this past weekend to meet up with great friends and do some camping adventure where we have not been before. We stayed at the North Beach Campground just a South of Pismo Beach's main town. We had perfect spot right next the the beach access and the restroom and showers. The camp grounds was great, with lots of trees and nice people around. Still need to worry about theft. We had 5 dogs with us, so I think that help deter any thieves from snooping around our camp. Camping simple, wake up walk and hike around the beaches and town, eat drink and be merry. Do it all over again the next day.... read more

Friday 23rd April Pismo Beach The journey here reminded us of the Dales back in England, lots of rolling green hills but with cattle rather than sheep. We were close to, but not quite on the coast. We arrived at Pismo Beach just in time for lunch and the mandatory lunchtime sleep afterwards! This was one big site, over 300 pitches, a pool, minigolf, clubhouse, restaurant and store and was fully booked for the weekend. Hardly surprising really given that there was direct access to the beach from the campsite. For the first time we got in a bit of a muddle over the itinery. The booking form for Pismo stated that we had two nights reserved so we had a slow and steady afternoon, I did the washing, Jonathan went for a run and Jack ... read more
