After breakfast on Sunday morning we left Phoenix destined for Flagstaff, where our official Route 66 road trip would begin. It was a very scenic two and a half hour drive. Once we reached Flagstaff we had lunch and also stopped in at the Visitors Information Centre before heading for the open road. Our first stop was Bellemont where the now abandoned Pine Breeze Inn sits, which was used in the Easy Rider movie. We weaved our way between the I-40 and the old mother road and continued on to Williams. It was such a buzz to see the iconic streets and buildings of the now historic Route in this town, still so full of colour and life. From Williams we continued on to Ash Fork, just west of which begins the longest unbroken stretch of ... read more

We made out way up the west side of Arizona today. We made a stop in Parker, AZ and had a picnic lunch along the Colorado River. Our next stop was Lake Havasu City where we stopped to check out the London Bridge. The bridge was given to Arizona in 1969, but it took over two years for Arizona to put all the pieces back together.. Pretty darn amazing when you think about it. We are overnighting at a KOA camp in Needles, CA. Yes, we have made it to California. Thank goodness we missed the 107 degree heat wave they have here last week... We are ready to see new things that neither Joe or I have seen before... Watch out California, the North to Alaska crew is out on your highways....... read more

At 2:30 in the morning, we discovered how they kept the grass so nice and clean as the KOA sprinklers gave Da Bean a bath! For Breakfast, we met up with Great (in so many ways) Aunt Terri at the local airport cafe Norms Hanger Coffee Shop. Good food, nice views, good company... I am led to understand that pilots actually fly in just to eat at Norms. The name is misleading.. they are way more than a coffee shop. Before we left Pamona KOA, Michelle went swimming and Tony "fixed" the bike rack. His previous fix to keep it from wobbling involved shoving some plastic wrap in as a shim. LA traffic thwarted that fix, so this time, Tony experimented with Duct tape... see below for results. Given yesterday's experience with LA traffic and lack ... read more

Got up early and did the washing. Great laundry room in the hotel - only $1.50 for a wash and $1 for the dryer. The machine was a top loader which was strange but i preferred it. What else is strange in America? The highways are mostly 6 lanes, everyone drinks coffee and all the rooms have a fresh coffee maker with individual sachets of fresh coffee, they don’t use shower gel - only soap, drivers use their horn a lot, the American trucks are beautiful, there are no small cars anywhere, there is no international news on the TV everything is all American, the majority of the shop workers and hotel staff are Mexican looking, everyone is really polite and helpful and nothing seems too much trouble, they all say have a nice day and ... read more
