The West was settled after the rise of the automobile, and designed with the car in mind. It was thus with a certain satisfaction that I pointed my little red car (a Chevy of course) north on Interstate 5 from San Francisco. Actually it wasn’t that little a car at all – a nice estate size in British terms – but in comparison to every car on the road it was. American cars are huge. Most are so big it requires considerable upper arm strength even to haul yourself into the passenger seat of one. I’d justify it in terms of the harsh winters here, but you don’t get snow in San Francisco. As I headed north, the landscape changed around me, from the winding roads and Pacific vistas of Marin County, to the golden hills ... read more

What a difference a couple of years made. Grandkids helped so much with the packing up. It used to be that it would take us hours to get everything together, but this time we were completely packed by 10a.m. Before leaving all of us came together to hold a small “Day of the Dead” in remembrance of Aubrey, our little granddaughter who never got to experience camping, and my niece Heidi who died way too young. We lit a candle for the light and incense to help lift their spirits to the Great Hunting Grounds. We also hoped for the spirits to give us safe travels home. We’d thought that we’d just take the road north to South Lake Tahoe, eat lunch and come on home. The road to Tahoe was much quicker than the one ... read more

Grover Hot Springs has lots of stuff to do for all ages; rocks to climb and to watch stars by at night, trails to hike, trees to sit under with a glass of wine during the warm afternoon, a stream to play in and, of course, the pools. Kids, older and younger, have had fun walking, sleeping in late in the tent, sitting at the meadow, reading, dancing on the rocks and talking. Clayton, Jen and their friends hiked out to the waterfall this morning 1-1/2 miles. We’d wanted to hike there but big kids weren’t awake yet and we didn’t know about walking with Zaya. When the group of friends came back they reported that the hike was not easy for kids and seemed long. So we were glad to be so lazy. I made ... read more

Nate, Bekki and Justin had to leave early in the day so we all had bacon and eggs early. Jen and I packed up a huge lunch salad: of quinoa, sundried tomatoes, olives, onions, pesto sauce and lime juice. We also packed up cold white wine, beer, chips and salsa, water, small glass wine glasses, tablecloths, a portable table and eating utensils. We piled into 3 cars and drove to Markleeville a small little town at the turnoff for Hot Springs Road. Just at the edge of the 2 block town you cross a bridge over a stream. There is a path to the stream, a path on each side with a nice little beach area. On one larger flat area we set up our table with tablecloth, all of the food, wine, beer buffet style. ... read more

Our run of luck, or rather no luck, has passed on to Clayton and Jen. Apparently their blow-up mattress deflated in the night so that their butts were dragging on the ground, Zoey woke up at 10p.m. and screamed until 2a.m. however I didn’t hear any of it, and then Zoey head butted Jen giving Jen a horrible black eye and swollen cheek. Poor Jen was in pain and all of them were so tired by morning. We did tease Jen about getting into fights, Nate, Bekki, Elias and Justin were to arrive early this morning we thought so we were waiting, leaving notes on where we’d be, that sort of thing. Since there is no cell phone signal at all we could not rely on text to keep in touch. We are roughing it!! Kids ... read more

Wednesday morning, July 4th, Grover Hot Springs, CA and the adventure just keeps going! We arrived at the nice early hour of 3a.m. having driven over a great cut off, Highway 89 from the 395. We drove over an hour at 20 mph for the last stretch. We had a full moon so we could see some of the landscape and it looked like we would like it in the day light, but who knows. So yes, we arrived at the campground at 3a.m. but we couldn’t ever get this RV into our site, I mean never! We drove around the campground and found empty sites but nothing we could get into so finally by 3:30a.m decided to just park by the visitor’s center and go to sleep. We got up at 7:30a.m when we heard ... read more

Faye, mum and I got up at 7, packed and headed off to find a Church for mum to go to for Easter Sunday service. We have been brought up as Christians, but only mum actively goes to Church. As the Church was very close to the Tenderloin area, we wanted to go with her to make sure she didnt end up in drug pusher land. We made a 9am low mass at the Advent of Christ the King Church. It was very similar to our services in the UK, but as it was low mass, there werre no hymns and it was half an hour long. After the servie, we walked throught he famers market and bought some lunch supplies and went bak to check on Zoe (who has a nasty cold). After packing, we ... read more

Having got back from Santa Cruz and the camping, i almost head straight up to Tahoe to meet up with other friends and who were chilling up there and had invited me to spend new years weekend with them. It was the most chilled new years eve i ever had, with good friends, good drinks and good food. Having taken 2 buses and a train, total 5hr journey to get up there, i can say this place was well worth the trip, as it was calm and beautiful peaceful scenery and that was just what i was after this year. We saw in the new year and made the most of every minute up there, by taking lovely walks around the lake and i even dived into the lake on new years day as it was ... read more

Today I head back to California. The road out of Reno follows the Tokatee River. This is the same route used by the former overland trail to the California gold fields (see June 21st). The canyon perfectly illustrates an effect called the Sierra rain shadow. When winter storms come off the Pacific, they hit the Sierra Nevada. The moisture condenses as it rises over the mountains, so much of it falls as rain and snow. The west side of the mountains is lush forest. The east side and the land beyond are desert and steppe. Near Reno, the canyon walls are covered in scrub. Heading west, plants grew denser and denser until I was surrounded by forest. Once in California, the river turns away from the main... read more
