When: July 4th Where: Foster city What: July 4th Fireworks At the 11th hour, we dropped our plans to witness the fireworks at Eureka, 300 miles from home. But we just could not miss seeing the fireworks. So, we gladly accepted a friend's invitation to view one of bay area's better fireworks(SF fireworks are the best, if you did not know) at Foster city. With the little one, we could not imagine wading through the SF human traffic. But the best part of Foster city fireworks was it was by the lagoon & there was boat traffic. We've never seen anything like that & it was pretty interesting to look at all the residents commuting by boat. In any case, in Foster city, residents dock their boat in their backyard ie., backwaters from the bay. Lucky ... read more

Thought I'd also chime in a bit here.. Anand and I realized that we have intuitively divided up responsibilities on all the planning on this trip - though personally i think i got the better end of the deal (unspoken and intuitive though it was)... the planning and making initial bookings with the travel agent, was my part, and finding our way, figuring things out on the road will be too, but he has taken care of all the business side of things - finding out abt visas, getting our docs together, confirming with the airline, reminding me to go get lots of passport photos, etc. The thing is that before the Europe trip we had lots of time to go over it all, and this time have basically just done stuff randomly. Hopefully between the ... read more

As promised, here is a longer discussion on weighty problems. It looks like if you travel around in SE Asia and then head to India (basically not going directly from US) then the weight restrictions are not the same as when you originate here. I think that is about 35 kgs per person. Given the six different carriers we are on on this trip, my guesstimate based on talking to different agents is that it varies anywhere between 20-23 kgs per person. Now that puts one into one of those math puzzle situations. You know the one with one boat and X people on one coast and need to take them to the other coast and all the permutations and combinations that are allowed/dis-allowed. Or the other one about driving across a desert in a vehicle ... read more

I am home and it's the same. I feel the same when I'm here. Likely this is because I am doing precisely what I was doing when I left: spending hours at home playing with my dog and computer. I will allow myself a week of this before I start to feel bad about it. The last leg of my trip was fantastic. I got to meet up with friends who have relocated to the east coast and enjoy the glory that is our land of the free! When I danced (yes I was dancing) of my plane at JFK Airport I was the most patriotic person ever. You don't EVEN know. I made my way over to Nate's place and ran into Fei, Chaz, and Antonio on the way there. Our reunion was glorious! We ... read more

I leave tomorrow. All week I've being saying goodbye to various people. I don't think it's really hit me yet. I'm a little bit overwhelmed with packing and making sure I have everything I need but I'm also very underwhelmed about this whole trip. I don't think I really realize the extent of it. I once went bungee jumping off a dam in Switzerland. 270 meters, one of the highest jumps you can do. Before the jump, I tried not to think about it and before I knew it I was jumping off the edge of the platform. and that was that...I didn't think it was scary or fun or exhilarating or anything really. I hope this experience doesn't mirror that one and end in bitter disappointment. Haha, that wont happen. This is gonna be awesome. ... read more

I've decided to use this website for my travel blog this time around...it's better than GetJealous. I'm not leaving for a good two and a half weeks (plane leaves March 3). And now that I've accidentally quit my job two weeks too early, I have nothing to do but sit around and twiddle my thumbs. The anxiety and nerves are building up, but that's at least motivated me to do some planning (in my head). I'll put these rough plans down so I can have something to refer too. So far, the idea is to spend a week in London experiencing the city then travel up to Glasgow enroute to Edinburgh. I've already booked myself a bus ticket (one quid funfare!)! I'll spend a few days in Glasgow and eventually head off to the intended final ... read more
