We left Twenty Nine Palms bright and early for today's adventure. Driving through the desert can be very boring. Long, monotonous highways with barely a curve for endless miles. It's good to have water to drink, preferably cold, and snacks. On the way we drove through the Mojave National Preserve, but couldn't tell it apart from any other piece of wilderness. Lots of dry scrub and the occasional Joshua tree. After about two and a half hours we reached our first stop, the Dumont Little Dunes. I saw them on Google Maps and we decided to have a look. It wasn't really worth the stop other than to get out of the car and stretch. There are just some small dunes set aside for off-road vehicles to play around with. We went on our way towards ... read more

Morgen wird also Plan B umges... read more

Geo: 36.4556, -116.867We were well and truly on the ocean road that would take us on a scenic drive all the way north to Canada so the first thing we did was… get off the road and head back into the heart of California to take in a number of well known sites including Yosemite, Sequoia National Park and Death Valley (with DH at the wheel driving in a straight line is just not going to happen). It was a great plan but nobody told us about the snow in California might impact your driving options. There was a lot of conversation about a 4 year drought that was impacting the State, but as we headed to Yosemite, the park was being buried in snow and roads were being restricted- vehicles were required to have chains ... read more

This entry was not in the plan, few days before Christmas, the Death Valley was not even in my mind. So if you ask, and I can do last minute too! While driving from LA to Las Vegas, I saw 2 or 3 times "Death Valley" at intersections. Our original plan for this 27th December was to take the relax drive from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and stop on the way to the outlets for some more shopping. But here it is, I just made my math, and we have too many kilos for the small plane we are going to take in a few days time. So no more shopping, let's try to keep it as simple. I went to google map, and find out driving from Las Vegas to the Death Valley and ... read more

We went on to Pahrump, Nevada, which is 60 miles North of Las Vegas. Surprisingly, Tom wasn't even concerned that I was within walking distance of the casinos! We took a day trip to Death Valley. It was beyond anything we expected. While traveling into the center of Death Valley we stopped at Ash Meadows, a wildlife refuge in the Mojave. At first, we thought it a mirage' but soon realized we were in wetlands fed by an underground geologic fault. We enjoyed our packed lunch and continued into Death Valley. The 20-mule team borax wagon originally traveled through Death Valley before the steam locomotive replaced it. Both "originals" are on display at the Borax Museum. We traveled to Badwater which is one of the lowest spots of dry land in the world, at about -278 ... read more

Geo: 36.3302, -116.574Spent more time exploring the Vegas Strip this morning then departed around lunch time. I am a little sorry we did not allow more time in Vegas. Although we explored several casinos and shopping malls, we barely scratched the surface of even the landmark venues. There's a Wyndham Resort near the Strip (where we have a timeshare equivalent) and we'll return for a week or two in the future. Then on the road. Desolate drive through Death Valley where the lowest point along the highway is 190 ft below sea level. 101deg at the Visitor Centre but dry, with a light, hot breeze. Arrived after dark in Mammoth Lakes, one of the biggest ski fields in USA. We're overnighting here in a two bedroom, two bath Westin suite. We were told bears are often seen ... read more

Road tripping in Southern California Our plan was to drive from Mini’s place in Fallbrook all the way to Sequoia National Park during one day, but Mini and Kristin told us about a camping site along the way, which would be right by the sea, so you could sleep next to the waves. As it turned out later, we had also once again underestimated to required travel time: it would have been impossible to reach the Big Sur scenic coastal road in daylight and get to Sequoia during one day anyway. Well, we could not camp on the beach, since we would have needed a 4WD car to drive to the campground along the sand (seems we are that much americanized by now that walking the one mile there with our camping gear did not even ... read more

July 28th, 2013. 9:00PM PDT Day 19 Traveled 313 miles today. Our day started out rather calm, but wait, it doesn't stay that way. From our motel in Henderson, NV we drove 19 miles to Hoover Dam and got there early to get a spot in the parking garage. Since we were carrying 3 gallons of gas in a can, we were not permitted to park in the garage. Where we were parked gave us our exercise since we had to walk about a half mile and do 84 steps ( I counted them ) both ways. The dam is so big, it amazes us how this could be built in the 30's. From there we headed to today's destination, Hesperia, Ca. About 11:00 am,WE MADE IT, To California. Not long after we got into a ... read more

Death Valley/Bishop First day of the tour we met the group and found out we were actually joining a group that had already been touring for a week and we were joining for the second week. The leader's name is Jane and she's from New York amd really into organic food. We stopped at a super market and got sleeping bags from Walmart. Then on to Death Valley, where it was hot and dry. It was so nice to walk around outside in the sun and heat and not sweat. First stop was Z point where you could see all the coloured layers in the rocky mountains. Greens, blues, reds yellows from all the different layers of minerals. It was beautiful. After that we went to Badwater which was like a big dried salt lake. It ... read more

Tuesday, May 22nd Terrible Casino, Lakeside RV Park, Pahrump, Nevada 7:37 and already 77 degrees, blue skies. Starting mileage was 26604. In looks, this is one of the nicest commercial RV parks we have been in. It was a real oasis in this desert with paved spaces, a small lake/pond in the center with a water spray/fountain, ducks and doves everywhere, and green grass and large shade trees for every space. Just too dang hot!!! Because of our concerns about the heat, we left early for Death Valley National Park after filling our tank with gas at the Casino’s pumps---$3.859 per gal and took 21 gals. Our plan was to just cross through the Park length wise and drive as far as the Inyo/Owens Valley and stay at a BLM campground that night. We left Pahrump ... read more
