Another epic July 4 SCUBA trip to the Southern Channel Islands! This year, all of my friends were on board- much to my surprise. We saw more critters this year than any other years I've gone: Over 18 Giant Sea Bass, Tuna, Dolphins, Sharks... The diving was great, in fact this is the best SCUBA diving California has to offer. We even stopped by the little visited Santa Barbara Island! This was my fourth July 4 trip. It has never ceased to deliver incredible diving and incredible fun! I've always wanted to take pictures underwater, but its such a hassle I dont bother. Then I broke down and bought a Sealife waterproof camera. It was a point and shoot with less than point and shoot quality. It wouldn't focus where I wanted, the flash sucked. I ... read more

For our 7 year wedding anniversary we did an overnight trip to Santa Catalina Island. We took a ferry for about an hour and a half from Dana Point. Dana Point is a beautiful place in itself and thriving with activity during the summer. We will have to make another trip out just to experience Dana Point. On our ferry ride over to Catalina Island we were pleasantly surprised with an amazing dolphin show. We passed by several schools of dolphins and one school decided to ride the ferry wake and follow us for a little while. It was amazing and a highlight of the trip. Especially since all the times we have been out on the water, we have never seen any dolphins. Arriving in Catalina Island, it was stunning. It was our first trip ... read more

The Channel Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean, just miles away from California. It is comprised of 5 unique islands - Anacapa, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel. I planned this trip for over a month now, so I had no problem waking up at 5:30a.m. that day. Reservations are highly recommended. The last thing you want to know is that you have to turn back after you are all geared up for a day of hiking. I am a light packer - when I go traveling, I only want to travel, I dont intend to make a fashion statement. I only bring whatever I need. For this trip, I made sure I have a good sturdy backpack to hold my camera, sunscreen, jacket, bathing suit, water, sandwich, sunglasses, my visor, and ... read more

Once you go on one live-aboard SCUBA trip to the Channel Islands, you will make sure that you don't miss another! It's been for 3 years in a row now that on July 4, myself and 25 others embark on a journey across the great expanse of ocean wilderness off the coast of Southern California. Next to the Sierra Nevada, the Channel Islands are the next best experience of the Wilderness of Calfiornia. Instead of exploring conifer forests of Pines, Redwoods and Sequoia's, you explore forests of Kelp teeming with fish, sharks and invertebrates. Did I just say invertebrates?! It's hard to refuse 4 days and 4 nights of SCUBA diving the warm water of California's southern Channel Islands. Being a live-aboard ship, all food and accomodations are taken care of. The only thing we had to worry about is how many dives to do per day, 2, 3 or 4? Exactly how long should I lay in the sun on the upper deck? Should I have a second serving of cake or dive with the spearfisherman? Should I do a night dive, or maybe I should wake up early and be the only one besides the captain to see the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean Wilderness. Leaving from the Santa Barbara Harbor on the Californian Riviera, the Truth Aquatics vessel was equipped for another epic journey. This was my second year on the trip, ... read more

My first live-aboard diving trip! 4 days on a Truth Aquatics Vision Live-Aboard boat with unlimited diving, great food and great people in the gems of the Mediterranean Pacific ocean off the coast of Southern California. Most diving was done on San Clemente Island, although we also dove at Catalina Island and Santa Cruz Island as well. Tons of wildlife, very warm water, incredible weather and a fantastic crew made the trip noteworthy! Lets not forget the 3 hours of drunken revelry for July 4 at Avalon Bay, Catalina. --Steve http://www.sphaydenphotography.com ... read more
