Man Made and Natural Wonders Driving between states in America quickly reminds you of the immense size of this country. In this blog I will cover our days in Vegas and the Grand Canyon as well as the road trip on the interstate back to Los Angeles for our flight to the second leg of our adventure. Tuesday 31st of October - Las Vegas Our day began early as we loaded up our car and headed for the interstate. To tell you the truth, I was ready to leave L.A., as cool as it was to be in L.A. I am and always will be a country boy and much prefer the open expanses and peace of such. Our drive took us through the open planes and valleys of California and into the great state of ... read more

Traveling to the Grand Canyon was a short but very nice trip. Upon arriving our campsite is wonderful and the weather is awesome. We relaxed the first evening then ventured out to explore the Grand canyon area. We started out going to the South Rim and taking in all the sites and enjoying the viewing areas along the whole rim. The Area is just awesome and colorful. The second day we took the Harley and rode down HWY 64 to a town called Grey Mountain. Along the way we stopped at a few stands along the way that the Indians were selling their hand made goods. When we arrive at Grey Mountain we find a deserted little area along the highway. It was a very nice ride, hot but nice. After a night of rest we ... read more

Our journey from Las Vegas to the Grand Hotel in Tusayan, included a tourist stop at Hoover Dam and a late lunch in Kingman. Although one of our longer road trips (driving time of around 4 and a half hours), the changing landscape enthralled us and the time passed quickly. It was late afternoon by the time we checked into the hotel (very nice indeed complete with its rustic cabin feel lobby, large stone fireplace and wood carvings) and we had a relaxing evening of pizza and TV. Our day at the Grand Canyon can only be described as truly awesome. We had been looking forward to our visit to this natural wonder and the experience itself certainly did not disappoint. It really is difficult to find the words (yes, even for me!) to describe the ... read more

We left Las Vegas on Friday and headed to our next destination; a little town called Tusayan, the function of which seems almost exclusively to be to hold tourists who are visiting the Grand Canyon. The drive through Nevada and Arizona was pretty cool, and was made even better by our stop at the Hoover Dam. The Dam itself is on the border of both states, and was built between 1931-5, during the Great Depression, when plenty of men were willing to up and move in order to find work to support themselves and their families. Even just the hour which we spent leisurely walking around the dam was made pretty uncomfortable due to the intense heat, so how anybody managed to survive the building of it is amazing to me. There's a memorial to commemorate ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, We checked out of our lovely LA hotel this morning and decided to have our breakfast en-route as today, we were going to Arizona. We decided to go down Down Town to see whether we would get a different flavour of LA. So we did! The day before, we noticed that a not more than 15-20 minute drive would take you into the Mexican-Indian communities and the trams. Who knew that LA had trams? What brought us into this area? Snow chains? We needed snow chains as we were going to four (4) National Parks and at least (3) of them had the strong potential of being in heavy snow situations so we needed to be prepared and had been advised to go to a special automobile shop which would have such ... read more

Hello all Fun day today. Early start with a predictable fight with the rental car company as they substituted a 6 cyl Chevvy Impala with a 4 cyl Camry. Jeez I hate these guys. Hertz this time but it really makes no difference. They are all as bad as one another and they know you need the car TODAY so they screw you. Anyway, they threw in at no charge a GPS (big deal - didn’t need one) and the extra driver charge. And at least the Camry has a familiar feel about it …….. So then driving on ‘the other side’ for 440 kms. NO SWEAT! Chris was so confident she slept most of the way. Had to wake her up for the Boulder / Hoover dam visit. That thing is huge = and the ... read more

Geo: 35.9746, -112.126We planned a layover at the Grand Canyon on the way home, then a leisurely drive north through more astounding canyon country to Kanab, Utah, north past Bryce Canyon National Park (didn't visit it this time, though) and over to I 15 straight north. This country is one red butte after another--almost more than the eye can absorb. We spent sunset and sunrise at the Grand Canyon. Sunset was pretty okay, but the next morning was overcast until around 9 or so, when the sun finally started peeking through and we could begin to see detail in the canyon walls. We especially got a kick (no pun intended) out of the elk cavorting and frolicking--we'd never seen elk play like that. This hotel was wonderful with comfy beds, large breakfast and helpful staff. We highly recommend it to ... read more

Hi everyone! Well we toured the South Rim of the Grand Canyon - the most scenic place to see it actually. There is a bus service that tours all around the national park and you can get on and off to go on different routes. It is definitely a great place to see the Canyon! The kids got a bit bored after a while just looking at the Canyon. They wanted to go into it. So we got a bus over to the South Kaibab trail and we walked into the Canyon to a place called "Ooh Ahh Point". The track was so narrow and you could easily fall into the Canyon if you weren't careful. At first, the trail was covered in mule poo and snow so it was very hard not to slip because ... read more

Ahhhhhhhh !! The air conditioning started working sometime during the day yesterday so Tim was able to get a cool good nights sleep. He was going to need it because we were planning on making the trip all the way to the Grand Canyon today without stopping. We packed up everything and headed towards the elevators only to find that three of the six were not working this morning. I thought to myself, what else is going to happen ?? We had to stand there while the elevator stopped nine times before we could squeeze into one. Oh well, I guess Kayla would say that all these things are what memories are made of ! We eventually got checked out and made a b-line for the motor home. It was so weird when we arrived at ... read more

Las Vegas - 10th / 11th March After a masterpiece of forward planning using timetables and maps we walked inside and around most of the major hotels, drawn in by their exterior beauty or their provision of free entertainment. One highlight was the lions in a glass-bottomed cage in MGM. We stood underneath the glass and watched them chew on enormous dog chews. I have a great photo of one lion licking the glass above me. Another highlight was the fountain display set to music in front of the Bellagio. Jets swayed from side to side and spurted up in a Mexican wave that hid the hotel from view. The damp squib was the Atlantis in Caesar's Forum. Statues descended and moving figures replaced them and spoke, then the alarm went off and' 'Sorry folks. The ... read more
