We took Hwy 68 from Bullhead City to Kingman, AZ. There was a sign on the Bullhead Parkway that read “Caution Watch for Burros.” At Kingman we took Route 66 to Seligman, which was designated a scenic drive. It was pretty, but nothing special. But as it turned out, the road was smoother than the interstate. We also saw 2 javelinas by the side of the road. At Seligman we got on I-40 and wished we’d stayed on Route 66 because it was so rough. At Ash Fork we drove south on Hwy 89 to Prescott, which I am told is pronounced PRESS-kit.

It was a short drive from Prescott to Phoenix with a stop at rest area with a name. It was called Sunset View and it did have a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains and the valley below. After we left the camper at Mr. Weber’s, we took the truck for an oil change before gathering our overnight needs and going to Skip and Mary’s. Skip had just arrived, but Mary had meetings all afternoon and into the evening. So Skip, Kerry and I went to the Tee
Pee for another delicioso (that’s Spanish for yummy) supper. We watched the Olympics until bedtime.

Neither Skip nor Mary had to be at work early, so we played a game of Hand and Foot before continuing on our way. Skip had been out early and bought us bagels and donuts. It’s been a great visit, we always enjoy our time with them. Thanks again, Skip and Mary. We love you both.
From Phoenix it is a long uphill climb on I-17 to I-40 at Flagstaff. We began to see patches of snow at around 6,000’. At the Grand Canyon only one loop at Mather Campground was open and it was not at all crowded. After setting up the camper, we drove to the visitor center then took a shuttle bus to Mather and Yavapai Points. We decided we would drive out Hermit Road and watch the sun set at one of the overlooks. We went to Hopi Point, which seems to be one of the northernmost points. Apparently there were others with the same idea, but it wasn’t too crowded. In the summer it is packed here with tourists, most of whom don’t seem
Along Route 66
Remember these? to speak English, but in the winter it is much less hectic. It was windy and chilly at Hopi Point, but the colors in the canyon deepened as the sun got lower. I was a little disappointed in the sunset, but the pinkish color of the afterglow along with the full moon and the clouds reflecting the sunset made for a very pretty picture.

Happy Valentine’s Day. Kerry walked outside this morning and came right back in to tell me there were deer near our camper. So I grabbed my camera and went out in my pajamas to take some pictures. There were 2 mule deer close by, but once they crossed the road, 3 or 4 more scooted across, too. Shortly after that, Kerry went to register for another night and came back with news that there were elk in the roadway to the campground. Since we were ready to head out for more viewing of the canyon, we hopped right into the truck and set off. About 50 yards from our camper (maybe less) were at least a dozen large elk just moseying around the campground. Then one by one, they settled
themselves down for their late morning naps. Some chose the leftover snowy patches for their beds, others just in the dirt. They did not seem the least concerned with the humans taking their pictures.
We drove out the Hermit Road all the way to the end at Hermit’s Rest, stopping at all the viewing points. The skies are slightly overcast, so the colors seem a bit more vivid than in bright sunlight which seems to wash out the colors. Then we went back to the visitor center where caught the shuttle bus east to Yaki Point and Pipe Creek Vista. What an amazing day it has been.
