So we are getting towards the end of the tour now but today we head to the Grand Canyon, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Now I saw the Grand Canyon back in 2000 and something & to be honest wasn't that impressed. We flew in from Vegas & landed on the South Rim & all I can remember thinking is "it's just a bunch of rocks". After the incredible Bryce Canyon a few days back it will have to be something special today.
Luckily it was quite cool this morning....only 86 degrees at 9am!!! It's around a 2 hour journey from Page & across Arizona. So it's IPOD on & I start to make an attempt to add up how much I've spent! I have to say even with the dollar being around 1.60, the USA isn't as cheap as it used to be and probably eating out isn't that much cheaper, if at all than the UK. It's been interesting talking to people on the coach tour as whether they are from the US, Austrailia, New Zealand or Portugal everyone is feeling the pinch with money, increase in taxes & everything being more expensive. Although
a litre of petrol in the US is MUCH cheaper than the UK - probably around 70p a litre if my calculations / conversions from gallons/dollars are right!
Now i have around 70 photos of the Grand Canyon so won't bore you with them all. We entered the Grand Canyon at the South Rim and stopped at various points for photo shots. In a good way it's cloudy so is a massive help in keeping the day cool but on the down side it doesn't give the greatest photos. Compared to the first time I visited actually walking around at the top you do get the sense of scale.....but i'm not as blown away as Bryce where every 2 seconds the word "wow", "wow" "wow" was repeated.
What is good is that we are actually staying in the Grand Canyon in lodges but are in the style of motels. There is a free shuttle bus around the Park so popped on this evening to go & watch the sunset. This has probably been the best part of the day. Sitting on a summers evening watching the sun go down was very peaceful & what I needed today. Again, it was cloudy so the sunset wasn't great but was very peaceful and one of those times in life you just have to take in and share with people around you.
What wasn't so peaceful is how quick the sun goes down....it's suddenly pitch black and the realisation I'm alone & haven't got a chuffing clue how to get back to the bus stop or my lodge!!! ****! This has been the first night where I've wondered off by myself and I haven't got a clue where I am. Now, there is high probability if you got into any gift shop you'll find someone off our tour bus as there are alot of shopaholic women (of which I'm not one of them!). Why is it on the one occasion I need to find someone....there isn't anyone! The more wierd experience was for an elk literally to walk by me, look me up & down & then walk on by! One of those - did that really just happen?!?!?!? My what huge antlers he had! Anyway, after asking some random chinese students (who as usual went in packs together) I managed to make it back to the bus & home.
So I'm typing this in my room which has NO AIR CONDITIONING. OMG it's chuffing boiling! I have a room fan which is as much use as a chocolate fire guard.. I could blow harder! I think I'm not going to sleep very much tonight which might be good as if I want to catch the sunrise at the Grand Canyon it happens at 5.27am.
The other important thing today is that my sister Claire started her journey to Vegas to meet me tomorrow! Today she was leaving Boro to head to Manchester on the train to the same hotel as me only 2 weeks ago - Bewleys at Manchester. We've been in regular "text" contact throughout the day..she's made it to the hotel & is having her first meal by herself in a restaurant! Go Claire! Now before I left for my travels, I left Claire a card which she was instructed not to open until she gets on the train to Manchester. In that card were 2 things - firstly $15 so she has the taxi fare to get from Maclaren Airport to the Tropicana Hotel & secondly, I've set her 10 challenges that she must complete in her week at Vegas!
So catch up tomorrow to see if I get the sunrise photo of the Canyon (don't hold your breath!) & if Claire makes it to Vegas to find out what her 10 challenges are!
WARNING - for the next week there may not be daily updates to this blog. The next 6 days I think & hope are going to be pretty mad! I've left it up to Claire to decide what were going to do but it is likely to involve night clubbing, drinking, sunbathing & I know going to see my 1980's Pop Idol Matt Goss at Ceasars Palace! Now in my early teenage years I wanted to marry Matt Goss and I have to say, he's one of those men who has just got better looking with age. For those who haven't got a clue who it is I'll upload a photo from the web if I can find one. So if I have my way I'll be leaving Vegas a married women!!!
