A great, unplanned start to the day.
Today we headed out west along route 66 and our first stop was Petroglyph National Monument. The native indians carved images of animals and other objects on the rocks as far back as 700 years ago. There were several trails to take to see all of them but we took the short tour (about 5 minutes). We took a few pictures and then continued on to Flagstaff. Along the way we saw a large group of motorcycles with police escort that blocked traffic for them. This group was headed to Washington DC for the Ride to The Wall.

As we headed out it got very windy with gusts up to 50 mph along with blowing dust. It was very difficult to maintain a straight line but we managed to do it. The wind lasted all the way to Winslow, AZ. Jason got hit in the face with a piece of tumbleweed. He's okay. The blowing dust and sand would sting exposed skin. In Gallup, NM we looked for a Dunkin Donuts but had to settle for McDonald's coffee.

We tried to follow route 66 as much as possible but we had to turn back on a couple of occasions

because the pavement ended. The next stop along the way was Petrified National Forest. This also included the Painted Desert. The ride through the park is about 28 miles and we ended up on route 180 a little south of route 66 & I40. From here we made the last leg of the day on I40 to Flagstaff and a relaxing evening. After we checked in to our motel we went to dinner at Salsa Brava where we had a sample of carnitas, some baja rolls and Navajo tacos. It was excellent.

Tomorrow we head up to the Grand Canyon and on to California (maybe).

It's been reinforced, but it's pretty neat to see a petrified tree as a bridge that's been there for thousands of years.
