This morning we woke to snow capped mountains which was something completely different for us especially for Soph who had never seen snow before, we also woke with the ship docked at our first stop the Alaskan town of Ketchikan. Kethcikan is a beautiful town set at the bottom of mountains and only accessable by sea and air, infact if you want to get to their airport you actually have to catch a ferry to another island. As part of the cruise they have a set of shore excursions you can choose to participate in (at a cost obviously), we chose to do the totem & Lumberjack combo which invovled a bus trip out to a national park where they tell us about the local indian heritage and how and why they make totems poles. We were told the about the different types of totem poles, story telling totems, memorial totems and informational totems that told you information about the clan, while incredibly cold it was also very educational.
Then on to the fun part of the trip the bus took us back into town where we were dropped off at the Lumberjack show which invovles a competition between American
and Canadian lumberjack teams, they did things like wood chopping competitions, and log rolling and also tree climbing. It was all very entertaining and funny. After taking a few more photo's of the town we headed back to the ship to prepare for the evening which involved a show by a comedian named Phil Tag (we'd never heard of him but apparently he's very big in the US, he was very funny) and then a stage show by the on-board entertainers called 'motor city' which was a tribute to motown music. Once again Soph hit the cocktails this time with a 'Three berry Daiquri' which apparently while very strong was really nice, over in the US they are very generous with the alcohol not like the crap watered down stuff they serve back home.
**Addition**
I realised after typing this that I had forgotten to add some very important details. Prior to us leaving I had arranged for us to 'celebrate' our honeymoon on this day, without Soph's knowing. So when we woke up this morning on the front of the door there was a poster attached saying 'Happy Honeymoon' and some balloons, Soph believing that was it
went on with her day thinking nothing more of it. When we returned to the ship after our shore excursion there was a little note at the door informing me to give this to the head waiter when we have dinner. We thought we'd try something new so we went to one of the more formal dining rooms for dinner, the service in these rooms is amazing they have 2 waiters to about 4 tables and they're super fast serving you, anyway once we had finished dinner and started dessert our 2 waiters walked up, both looking very nervous started singing happy honeymoon (to the tune of happy birthday) it was hilarious since the were both mexican males and lets just say they're better suited in their current jobs.
Life size replica of a Indian houseThe whole tribe would live in this house the totem poles out the front tell you what tribe it is and tell a story about their chief, the more lavish the pole the richer the tribe.
Owen asleepI had no idea Soph took this photo... obviously as I was asleep lol
In action againThey actually had two female Lumberjacks called Lumberjills man they were huge
More of KetchikanIn Ketchikan they actually have streets which are stair cases. If you live on these streets more then most likely you'll have no vehicle access to your house so you'll have to climb a stair case every
