Here I am managing to keep jet lag at bay by writing a few lines and keep myself awake. Rosalind and I had a wonderful journey here to Alaska yesterday, flying from Gatwick to Reykjavik and further connections in Seattle to Anchorage. Keflavik airport was very busy, as it is now quite a big hub for North American flights , and very expensive as Ros found out when she picked up a couple of snacks...... $9 for a bag of nuts and a flapjack bar almost sent her into a spin ... so the flapjack went back !! Then we had the excitement of her name being called over the tannoy system and off we toddled to the Info Desk to be told she had been specially selected by US Immigration for a security check . ... read more

ALASKA, A COOKS TOUR It’s May and time for my trip to visit my brother who lives in Chugiak, Alaska, a small bedroom community in South-Central Alaska, about 20 miles north of Anchorage. I arrived in the early morning; it was still dark at their house. The sun was soon up and I heard a low howling by one or two dogs. In rapid succession more and more dogs joined in the synchronized baying. The eerie howl was enough to cause shivers, enough to make me imagine that I was in the midst of a wilderness or perhaps engrossed in reading The Call of the Wild. It was the wakeup call of the sled dogs kept at my brother and sister in laws house. Chugiak is a quaint collection of modern, homemade, cabin like and curious ... read more

Another amazing Alaskan weekend. Enjoyed a fun and easy hike up Mt. Baldy on Saturday and walked along the ridge a ways. The excessive wind blowing on us eventually chased us away and prevented us from checking out the last maybe 50 ft up to the top. You literally couldn't take off your jacket or it would blow off of you, and if you have a runny nose, snot rockets will follow. Went to town (Anchorage) for a 21st birthday party at bar combined with about 6 different bars and types of music that had a metal detector at the entrance (what a great place for people watching). Wow! A little overwhelming, I think I enjoy the quest Palmer bars a lot more. Sunday was a rainy gray day and was great for catching up with ... read more

On our way to Palmer, Alaska, we stopped to hike to Thunderbird Falls. It was so lush and green it seemed like we were in a rainforest. It felt so great to be out in the middle of the forest with the only sound of birds, water, and even annoying mosquitos buzzing by your ear. I do miss this feeling of being in the woods! ... read more

The winter in Alaska can be brutal, but that does not stop the outdoor lovers from seeking adventure. While Caitlin visited for the winter holiday we decided to do a short overnight backpacking trip out to a Mongolian Yurt in the Eagle River Nature Center. We started our adventure on skis. This was short lived as it had not snowed in over 2 weeks and the ground was practically ice. We figured that this may be a little too much for Caitlin’s second time on a pair of skis as she admitted to almost falling 3 times in 5 seconds with a 30lb pack in 10 degree weather. I am not the best on classic skis and almost bit it on the first icy hill myself. After about 5 minutes of this, we turned around and ... read more

Danielle and the girls went to the Eagle River Nature Center for a hike. They had a great time. Eagle River is about 10 miles north of downtown Anchorage and the nature center was about 12 miles off the highway back in a valley. Danielle really liked the Eagle River area (there are quite a few folks at work that I have met that live there). Because of the valley in which this town lies, in the winter time, there are two months in which Eagle River gets no direct sunlight!! One of the loop trails was closed because of the bear activity in the area. Apparently, there is a good size salmon run in the Eagle, which draws a good crowd! The girls saw salmon spawning while they were hiking. They could have watched them ... read more
