2 Aug 2016: I remember an old James Cagney movie called "White Heat". Cagney played this real tough guy. Actually, he was a psychopathic murderer. At the end, the cops chased him to the top of a gas tank. The huge tanks they have at refineries. He's up on top but the cops dare not shoot. Cagney screams, "Look ma, i'm on top of the world." Then he puts a couple of rounds into the tank, blowing himself up. Today we left Dawson City for Tok, Alaska via "The Top of the World Highway". We first had to cross the Yukon River on the little ferry paid for by the Canadian government. It runs on demand and there is no charge. Captain and crew made the trip over quickly and without incident. We were on our ... read more

The morning started cloudy but pretty quickly began to clear - kinda. I take the beautiful drive back to Delta Junction. It is always nice to go back the other way because it is so different looking at the other side of the mountains and hillsides. The people at the Delta Junction major petro stop at the intersection of Alaskan and Richardson highways were very friendly and all accommodating. I sat and used the faster Internet which allowed me to get pictures uploaded for the couple days I had managed to catch up since I couldn’t do so at the lodge. It was almost like a little Internet Café and they had no problem with my sitting there for as many hours as needed with great coffee. One of the new road side signs on the ... read more

I awake fairly early and quickly realize day 17 is not going to go as planned. With the loss of sleep two nights ago, the additional all day in the car yesterday on sensory overload, I’m feeling exhausted and muscles again clamoring such that any hiking as I intended to do today is simply out of the question. Like it or not, a rest day is required. I open the drapes and lay back down with the most incredible mountain views as I just lay there looking out the windows. What a life! Breakfast is pancakes, sausage, fruit, juice, coffee and I am surprised I am easily able to eat it all. I head back to my room and while allowing bodily rest, work on blog pictures and writing. Lunch is not provided as a full ... read more

Hi Everyone, Well Adam & I made it to Alaska finally and are camping at Delta Junction just 150kms south of Fairbanks. Tomorrow we’ll try to achieve Galbraith Lake campground at the milepost marker 275 along the Dalton highway en-route to Prudhoe Bay. From there we’d like to set out the next day and ride the 225 kms north to Prudhoe, get the necessary photos and hightail it back to Coldfoot (milepost 175) in one day depending on weather and road conditions. As you can tell, Adam had very little trouble crossing the US border with no number plate. In fact the border guards did notice it was missing but couldn’t be bothered! Right now the weather is dry and sunny and around 20 degrees c. We’re going to hit the hay early tonight because the ... read more

Geo: 64.0378, -145.732We ventured into the wilderness along the Denali Highway, a 135-mile stretch of dirt road which connects Paxston (near the Delta Junction) with Denali National Park. We lunched at Tangle Lake where Kaia enjoyed a long swim and we watched the weather roll across the sky. Then we took a lovely hike which gave us our first view of the Alaska range and the valley below. Unfortunately, no caribou though. Last night we camped at a picturesque creek where we spent the evening fishing for grayling. Sean rose several, and I momentarily hooked one, but neither of us had luck landing any. What a cherry campsite though! And the weather (so far--fingers crossed!) has been pretty wonderful. ... read more

I left Palmer this morning in a drizzly fog. For the first hour of driving I was tired and bored and all I could think about was the fact that I still had 3000 more miles of driving before I reached home. It was starting to feel a bit overwhelming. But then the fog lifted, it stopped raining, the sun came out, I put the top down on the Miata, the scenery was fantastic and all was right with the world! The rest of the day’s drive was excellent with partly to mostly sunny skies and only a few scattered showers late in the afternoon. I stopped to visit Matanuska Glacier mid-morning. I was able to get the car within about ¼ mile of the glacier and walked the rest of the way. Unlike Exit Glacier ... read more

I don't know why I'm always amazed at how God can teach me things through the toughest times in my life and it be exactly what I need. He really does know what I need at the most appropriate time. I shouldn't be surprised after all he IS God! Thank you Lord for constantly reminding me of this fact! You are always here and I'm the one who continually has to struggle to come back to you. I've spent way too much time in my life trying to be "something" that I'm not. Trying to be what the "world" tells me I need to be but the reality is I'm a child of God and I don't belong to this world. "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of ... read more

I have often wondered about the phrase “If life gives you lemons then make lemonade” and what it means exactly? After the recent events of the past few months of my life I think I’m beginning to understand. I have had no choice but to “deal” with the blows that have been distributed my way. My choices were few but very evident. I could either learn to roll with them or try my darndest to fight it somehow. Fortunately, I’ve lived long enough to know that fighting it just prolongs the inevitable. If there is a lesson to be learned here it is best that I go ahead and allow it to happen instead of fighting it. In the end the result is the same, it’s the time it takes to get through whatever lesson is ... read more

I'm fairly new to this "blog" thing but not so much to living spiritually as a Christian. I have had my struggles and longer than I am proud of moments away from the Lord but I can still spot spiritual warfare when it hits. I think I've managed to focus some attention to myself in this blog. Sad to say, it's been a long time since I've felt this but nonetheless I cannot deny its existence. Let me share with you what has happened. In my adventure here to Alaska and "finding myself" here lately, I have had some pretty amazing revelations and moments of clarity. Before I left on my journey I was blessed by my aunt and uncle with a laptop computer. This was to be one of my tools I was going to ... read more

I have often thought that once you get to a certain point in your life, one ought to be able to look back and trace the steps that led them to the place where they are now? Well I’ve been doing this and have come to the conclusion that I must have lost my brain somewhere through the last 5 years! Seriously! When I go through the events dating back 5 years ago to now I am shocked at how stupid and juvenile some of the decisions I have made have been. Another thing I have been thinking about lately is the “legacy” or the “life map”, as I like to refer to it, that I have been leaving behind. Think about something for a moment. If your life were to end right now what kind ... read more
