Slow start - bag pull not till 1000. Today we get on the trams Alaskan railway to Anchorage. We decide to eat and go to the visitors centre in the park so put bags out early. Turn around and picked up already - good service. Onto shuttle with half the group so no problems with list or times. Do the visitors centre which had a good display of Alaskan life style. Beautiful day of sunshine so made the best of it. Go to station and meet tour director and bus driver again. All present and accounted for. Train arrives and we share the last special carriage with another group - Alaskan wilderness carriage which has domed upper level seating and restaurant downstairs. Great views. Away we go and the views are hard to pick - which ... read more

Flying to Alaska is a unique experience. Because of the distance and time zone, many flights leave or take off at times when most airports would be shutting down. We arrived in Anchorage near midnight and were surprised to see crowds of people waiting for flights departing in the early morning hours. The airport itself is good for spotting very large cargo planes as they arrive from Asia alongside small regional and bush planes arriving (sometimes by water) from remote areas of Alaska. For anyone with a kid (or grown-up kid) who enjoys planes, I would recommend budgeting a couple of hours to watching at or near the airport - it can be an experience while waiting for your flight. Now, chances are, the passenger flight to/from Anchorage won't be anything special, and in fact it ... read more

Arrived in Anchorage late last night. Had difficulty finding a free camp in town...we were real tired so we ended up parking next to some parked trucks outside of Sams Club. Our usual "in town" spots all had large signs saying overnight parking not allowed and vehicles would be towed away. Spent the morning packing our bags for our Canadian flight tomorrow. It's a sad feeling to be leaving this beautiful place but we are also excited about our next destination - Canada. Visited the Alaska Zoo today. $12 admission per adult and we used our toursaver coupon here. The zoo is close to downtown Anchorage and the exhibits were mostly from North America. The zoo was in a forested area, plenty of shade and room to move for all the captive animals. Our favourite today ... read more

Well, it is my last day in Alaska. Rain is predicted. Again. But, my niece has made reservations at Anchorage's most popular brunch spot, Snow City Cafe. I love brunch! And it doesn't disappoint. It is very busy and we have to wait even with reservations! After fueling up we trot over to the farmer's market which I'm very impressed with. Lots of enormous vegetables (apparently they grow large due to the long days of daylight) and lots of local arts and crafts. Then we head over to Resolution Park with its tribute to explorer Captain Cook. We head back to the house for a few hours where Will frets over his NC State Wolfpack football players where his constant diligence ensures their victory. That evening, I have found an interesting tour and weaseled Ginny into ... read more

We decided to take a different route from North Pole to Anchorage. Driving along the Richardson Highway we drove past the Aleyska Pipeline through Delta Junction and then to Paxson. For 35 years, Alyeska has operated the 800-mile Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), safely moving oil from Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope of Alaska south to the Port of Valdez, the northernmost ice-free port in the United States. The pipeline traverses three mountain ranges, permafrost regions and 34 major rivers and streams. Alyeska personnel work in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Valdez and at pump stations and response facilities along the way. They also operate the Ship Escort/Response Vessel System (SERVS) for Prince William Sound. We stopped at ... read more

back at the hotel after a pretty fun day. because i used the hotel's "green" option (don't touch my room, i don't need anything), i got a 5 dollar voucher to use at the hotel. the nice thing about this town is that it is laid out on a gird system. that makes walking and finding things a bit easier. but it also means nice canyons for the wind to blow down. wandered down to the center of town and saw the guy selling trolley tour tickets. the 12 o'clock tour was full, so i kept walking. went to resolution point where there's a nice view (probably a gorgeous view when there aren't clouds), and a statue of Captain James Cook. went to the snow city cafe for lunch, then walked over to elderberry park and ... read more

Nice flight up from Seattle to Anchorage. A bit bumpy descending, but not terrible. Sat next to a nice couple from Scotland. Cloudy and cool here, but not too bad. The globus book said it was 45 minutes from the airport to the hotel, but it was more like 15. All checked in and off to figure out what i'm doing the rest of the day and tomorrow.... read more

Had a sleep in this morning...totally exhausted! The Arctic Adventure Hostel provided us with a bed for the night. It was very clean and the shared bathroom was kept immaculate. The care taker Tiffany was a fine young lady with a great smile and personality. Took a taxi to pick up the RV. There was a few hours delay waiting for the RV to be serviced and detailed so we went for a walk over to the mall and had lunch at the grocery store. that helped to fill in a bit of time. RV was ready at 4pm. The manager of the RV place kept us amused within his stories of growing up in Alaska. Unpacked our gear into our new home...what a relief to be able to put clothes away out of a suitcase. Stocked ... read more

Only caught a couple of hours sleep last night after we checked into hotel, did the washing/ drying, caught up on emails etc. Up at 5am, got a taxi to the train station to check in for the 4 hour scenic journey. Train left Anchorage station at 6.45am. We bought adventure class tickets for the journey which meant we got to sit in the upper level glass dome carriages. It certainly was a treat - the scenery was amazing..words can't describe how spectacular and large this place is..we saw hundreds of glaciers on this train journey. If this is a sign of the scenery we are going to experience of the next few weeks - it is certainly going to great some fantastic memories for our photo albums. Learnt some interesting facts about Alaska today - ... read more
