Slept late today - - didn’t get up until 6:15 !!! We broke camp and got in line at the ferry loading parking lot at about 10:15. They finally started loading the ship about 11:15 - - we were almost the last two rigs on - - the wait listed people were after us, about 4 of them. Ship departed at 1:15 (an hour late). It was an hour of delightful scenery down to Haines. Since we were almost the last on, we were almost the first off. They crew were very good at giving driving instructions to back us to the point where we could drive straight out. Pretty drive up the Haines Hwy to Haines Junction. The only eagle we saw for sure was at Skagway while waiting to load onto the ferry. ... read more

On June 28, we finally reached the Alaska border crossing only to see the height clearance was marked 13 feet—at least 6 inches too short! What were we to do? The high-clearance RV lane was closed for construction. The commercial/truck lane (which had no canopy) was blocked by cones from the lane we occupied. A sign clearly stated that travelers should NOT get out of their vehicles unless instructed to do so by a Border Patrol officer. So, of course, Bill (driving the coach in front of ours) got out of his vehicle to investigate and went right into the building. By this time, we were blocking at least a dozen vehicles behind us. The officer finally told him the height clearance was actually 13 feet 6 inches and we should proceed. So, we sneaked under ... read more

The ALCAN (Alaska Canadian Highway) is a long, laborious, sometimes tedious, sometimes gravel, always exciting adventure. The road bumps, twists and grinds through British Columbia and the Yukon Territory beginning at Mile Marker 01 (Dawson Creek). Along the way unbelievable vistas jump at one from every new bend in the highway. Massive mountains, sharp peaks, flat expanses, pristine untouched forests, beautiful lakes, roaring rivers and wonderful wild animals. Throughout our trip including British Columbia and Alberta, Canada we have seen animals up close, on the road going about their daily survival. We’ve seen black bear and black bear babies, grizzly bears (one actually stood up and looked at the coach in front of us), stone sheep, long hair goats, Dahl sheep, Elk and elk babies, buffalo and their young and caribou. We have fabulous pictures of ... read more

We went on the wonderful cruise tour. We left Skagway and went into Haines. The photos pulling into the Haines harbor are some of my favorites. We saw several humpback whales, sea lions and Bald eagles. We had 3 hours ashore in Juneau. We went to the State Capital. but Sarah wasn't there. Back on the ship for more whale and glacier watching. A wonderful 9 hour tour. The next morning we had to catch the ferry at 5:45. We crossed the channel over to Haines, drove on in to Haines junction to see if we could get tickets to the Blue Grass festival, no luck. We went to a bakery for a Salmon Bake where one of the bluegrass bands was playing. Next day, we got back on the Alaska highway. What a bumpy road! ... read more

When I was getting ready to depart Kluane Lake, I thought I would plug Fairbanks, AK into the "where to" on the GPS. It just said, "Turn in 443 miles." I guess I won't get lost. There's only one road to get there. I got an early start. After Whitehorse the road gets quite a bit rougher and the wilderness is deeper. There are more and more frost heaves in the road. The engineers call them thaw bulbs. They cause a roller coaster type ride and you better slow down or they'll launch you. They are usually about 50 feet across and you rise, then drop, then rise again. They occur because all of the land here is permafrost down a few feet which never thaws. The road itself causes an unnatural thaw in the permafrost ... read more

The teen crowd has mushroomed into 3 sports teams and they are all camping on the same deck as me… a big slumber party with teen boys and girls. This is going to be a long night indeed. Every square inch of the floor is covered with sleeping bags, but they are getting off in Juneau at 6 am. I am happy that I staked out my own aisle because some aisle because some of the aisles are 4 girls deep with their legs hanging out in the walkway. At this time the girls should be done braiding each other’s hair and doing their scavenger hunt which entailed them running around the ship. Squeals are coming from all directions so maybe if I close my eyes they will all go away. I bet that the Elder ... read more

The final 15 hours that I spent driving to Anchorage were largely uneventful if you don’t count the near skid into the ditch or the intense interrogation at US Customs. I got off the ferry at Haines, AK and drove to Haines Junction, Yukon the first day, a 3 hour drive. Getting into Canada was easy enough, it was pretty cold outside so I don’t think that the guy wanted to stand outside anymore. On my drive, I passed by Tatshenshini Alsek National Park, passed my favorite river, Tatshenshini River (my e-mail) and Alsek River (my parent’s e-mail). We did a two week rafting trip a couple of years ago and it still ranks as an all time favorite experience for me. It was the first of many moments where I felt like I was truly ... read more

Well… here it is, I am finally on the Alaska State Ferry, Malaspina, making the journey “North to the Future.” We left Bellingham last night and soon all the lights along the coast disappeared. We have left the confines of society and we are truly at the mercy of the elements of the wilderness, but hey! at least they remembered to bring movies to play in the movie theatre aboard! It is unusual in this day and age to be in such a remote place, hundreds of miles away from anything remotely civilized. I will take 40 hours to pass through Canada and reach our first stop, Ketchikan, AK. Ketchikan is where they proposed to built just one of the “Bridges to Nowhere.” I am traveling to Alaska to start a new job, but first I ... read more
