Wow...BOTH kids and grandkids came to visit for a week. It was exciting, fun-filled, exhausting, rewarding, and ought to be repeated at least semi-annually. Kim had finished her summer classes for her MBA and had a 4 week break. Her visit had been in the works for a while and she wanted to be here for Trish's birthday (Aug 2). Josh wanted to bring the boys to visit, go to Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, and catch fireflies. He told us this spring he hoped to come at the end of July. Finally, both kids talked to each other, worked out details, and Kim, Kris, and Sophie (chocolate lab) arrived Sunday, July 30. When we had checked in shortly after 1 am the guy at the desk told me that there was one heck of a storm due in a couple of hours and would likely last until noon the next day. It was headed north from New Orleans so at least once it passed we would have seen the last of it. When we woke up it was still raining a bit but not badly and I had hopes of getting quickly on the road and arrive before 3pm in New Orleans. Caroline and Tyler tell me that there was much thunder and lightning as the storm came through last night but I slept through it all. Allo, Montgomery est la capitale de l'Alabama, population de 201,000 personnes....ce qui n'a pas paru quand nous avons visité. Le centre ville était assez tranquille! Ce qui nous a marqué c'est l'Église où a prêché Martin Luther King pendant 6 ans. L'Église est simple et le son et la musique résonnent de façon SUPER! A+... read more

Wedding Day ! Mittags treffen wir uns noch zur Geburtstagsfeier von Erik. Dort sind inzwischen auf Mike und Sally, die von Houston, Texas, angereist sind (sind ja nur 10 Stunden Fahrt und am Sonntag geht’s wieder zurück). Danach geht’s zurück ins Motel zum Umziehen und wieder raus nach Wilkes Cove. Ich bin eigentlich rechtzeitig losgefahren, hab aber in meinem Leben noch nicht so viele Ampeln erlebt … zum Glück war der Zeitplan aber eh schon etwas verschoben und ich bin somit rechtzeitig für die Familienfotos gekommen. Die Hochzeit hat dann um 17 Uhr begonnen. Das Wetter hat zum Glück mitgespielt und die Hochzeit konnte wie geplant draußen stattfinden. Nachdem ich schnell eine Maschine Wäsche gewaschen habe (Unterwäsche und Socken kommen in den Trockner, T-Shirts werden im Auto aufgelegt zum Trocknen), geht’s auch schon wieder weiter und ich schaue mich ein wenig in Columbus um (Schiff bei einem Museum, Cadie the Cow, Universitätsgebäude). Gleich über dem Fluss liegt Phenix City, das schon in Alabama liegt und somit die nächste Zeitverschiebung ansteht. Da ich insgesamt 3x über den Fluss fahre, darf ich 3 Zeitzonenänderungen innerhalb von 30 Minuten mitmachen :-) Und wie sich das für Amerika gehört, gibt’s dort auch Erinnerungsstätten für POW-MIA (Kriegsgefangene und Missing in Action) und die Feuerwehrleute, die bei 9/11 gestorben sind. Immerhin wird aber auch an Indianer erinnert, die an dieser Stelle hingerichtet wurden … Auf dem Weg Richtung Dothan besuche ich den Lakepoint Resort State Park bzw. das Eufaula Nationa ... read more
