I begin back with some late summer and early fall travels. My seeing a new state and somewhat far-off literary landmarks are at a pause for now, but I have been to the following since August: Hilton Head Island, Savannah, the Virginia Highlands in Atlanta, the Florida Panhandle and Mobile, Alabama, plus another location of the music store chain that I briefly worked for during their busy season. All in all, I managed to come up with some material to put together a new entry. It is a new season and I welcome that fact, yet many a day comes when I longingly gaze at my atlas or wall maps. I probably shouldn’t even list the many places to which I’ve yet to make the venture, or the combinations of sights and cities that I must ... read more

Oct 28 Day 11 380 miles down, 270 miles to go. We have joined up with another sail boat which is traveling about the same speed as we are. Sharpies Dream is a 32 ft Bayfield cutter and is from the North Channel on Lake Ontario. Pat and Dianne left on there trip around Sept 1. They sold their home and are headed for the Bahamas. They will make further plans when they get that far. We covered 65 miles today, all under motor power. That’s the most distance we have traveled in one day. The little 10 HP Westerbeke diesel engine just keeps on chugging. We have been burning about 2 gallons of fuel per day. Some of the power boats that have been passing us burn that much in 15 minutes. We rafted with ... read more

Mobile and Dauphin Island - 7th-8th October We arrived in Mobile (pronounced Mobeel) a little after 4pm and headed towards the tourist information centre to get our bearings of local area. Mobile rests about 150 miles East of New Orleans on the Gulf Coast and we decided it would be a nice stop prior to heading to New Orleans itself. Upon arrival Mobile looked very much like an industrial city with ports and trains coming in and out on a regular basis. After speaking to the 2 friendly, elderly ladies in the tourist info who gave us lots of ideas of things to do, we then reserved our campsite 10 miles north of Mobile. We decided to check out a small island nearby known as Dauphin Island which the tourist ladies had said was a lovely ... read more

Oct 15 Day 6 Today we were able to get a ride on a spectator boat to watch the racing up close. The racers had a good wind and that made for a rough ride in the power boat we were in. I can hardly wait to get back on a sail boat. There was lots of excitement on the starting line; as you can see from the photos. When you have 30 boats starting it can get a little nuts. After the 3 races were done, our favorite boat, Peter Pan, was in 6th place overall. A nice day of racing. After the race we were invited to a dinner party hosted by one of the Club members on their patio. There were over 100 people at the party. Some more great generous Southern Hospitality. ... read more

Oct 11 Day 2 We found the Green Turtle Marina after driving around Grand Rivers, Kentucky for a while. We spent most of the day raising the mast and launching Amber Lee. The marina office is on a floating dock. We have a slip 20 feet from the office, lounge area and shower facilities. We have already met a number of cruisers. Everyone is very friendly; want to know where you came from, where you are going and what type of boat you have. We met people from Ontario, Michigan and Ohio. Many of these people are “Loopers”. Great Loop We are the only ones around that trailered their boat to this place. Everyone else has spent weeks or months getting this far South. Question of the Day - What is the name of the river ... read more

After we packed our gear in the truck and took a second look at our check-list, Nate and I were on the road, eager to get out of the city. We wanted to get to Tuscaloosa, AL by mid-afternoon to visit one of my best friends from high school at the University of Alabama. Alabama's scenery was very relaxed with long, rounded hills and mountains. We decided to stop at the University of Alabama to see one of my best friends from high school. As we left Tuscaloosa I noticed another change in the landscape as it began to flatten out and disperse. We were deciding between continuing on I-20 west to Dallas or going north-west up to Oklahoma City and getting on I-40/66... we decided on going through Dallas. We both wanted to see as ... read more

3:00 AM is always a nasty time to wake up, but that’s what we did Thursday morning enroute to the International Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, NM. The plan was to meet Don and Benny in Cuba, AL at 5:00, ride hard to Amarillo, TX for steak and a good nights sleep. That plan quickly went down the drain! We stopped for gas in Jackson, MS and once back on the interstate I noticed how poorly my motorcycle was handling. A dive off at the next exit revealed that my rear shock was blown. What that means is the bike was supported only by the spring without any dampening action. It was like riding a 1000 pound pogo stick! My suspension is an upgrade from stock, so a call to Traxxion Dynamics got the name and number ... read more

August 8th Brewton, AL SEEING THE RELATIVES We woke up from the rest stop welcome center and finally got hold of the RV people. After all that they just told us to ride down the road to the nearest gas station and put air in the tire so that's what we did and it worked! It's been holding air ever since. We drove a couple hours to Brewton, Alabama. Brewton is where Phil's dad grew up and many of his relatives still live. Phil called his Uncle Jack and after we took showers in the Walmart parking lot(well in the RV not actually out in the parking lot!) We headed on over to see Uncle Jack and his wife Kathleen. We first stopped by his dad'sold high school. It's not actually the same building as when ... read more
