Isla MujeresIsla Mujeres... taken on a day before the cyclone..!
Ah well, our exact location isn´t on the above drop down menus but for info we are on the little ´Isle Mujeres' which translates as ´The Island of women´ . Its a lovely place ;o)
The best is sat next to me of course, frantically rattling away on hotmail, no doubt deleting as muchas she is typing as I am because all the keys on the keyboard seem to have been removed, shaken in a bag and put back on in the order they were picked out in!
Well, this place is beautiful. The sea is turquoise and even seems to glow where the shallow bits out to sea are and the white sand below the water is reflecting the sun. Today there´s no sunshine though becuase we´ve had the tail end of a cyclone or something in the Atlantic I think. Massive high winds and sideways rains so its pretty exciting. We are planning a day trip back over to the mainland but not many of the boats are running back to Cancun, ah well, I can think of worse places to be stuck :o).
The trip´we are planning is to Chitzen Itza which is a place
in the middle of the Yucatan Peninsula (South East Mexico) and will take a few hours to get to. Its some massive imppressive ruins, especially the massive stone steps that look a bit like pyramids. Its where thousands of people were sacrificed at the top and their heads and other body parts were booted down the steps to bounce to the bottom whilst people cheered. I´m mostly hoping they´ve given up this tradition when we get there for something more mundane like selling ice-creams and beaded necklaces.
We.ve got a few pics but won´t upload any until we have a decent number and can put them on CD at the same time.
Oh, I got my bag after 4 days so today is the second day with my bag (we have a relationship now), I didn´t realise how precious my back-pack and everything in it was until the numpty´s at miami airport had lost all trace of it for 3 days and I was fearing it gone forever. It happens all the time apparantely. I was stinkin, but am now clean and happy. Erin was semi-stinkin but got hers back after 2 days. SHe was kind enough to
New Foundland Emergency stop at New Foundland, Canada due to a medical emergency
let me use her shampoo and wear her knickers but none of her other clothes would fit so I was glad of mine returning.
New years eve was really interesting, we hung round at the hostel thinking thats where the party would be at but quickly realised it wasn´t (at 23:50 when the music finished and everyone sat around talking quietly?!) We briefly discussed what the place would be like if it were full of Aussies or Brits before legging it to the main square of this little Island where there was a big count-down, a stage, loads of music and people salsa´ing which was ace. We wiggled through the crowd, got some food and soaked up the atmosphere then went for more drinks around down before finishing off at the hostel which had finally livened up a bit. Today, because the weather is dull its given us chance to learn our backpacker game like little geeks and for me to remember just how competitive my Australian counterpart is (I won).
We have almost god rid of our christmas coughs and snivels and are no longer wearing nappies just in case. All in all, we are fit, well
and I for one am feeling ace! ;o) Erin too, we even both went for a run (stumble at this point) yesterday morning and are planning to be super fit very shortly. I can highly reccommend selling your house and spending the proceeds on travelling adventures, its proper investment ;o)
I hope everyone is really good and enjoyed bringing in 2008. Erin and I both send our love, I think Erin is replying to many of your messages at the moment. Will carry on updating every week or so but will keep it more breif than this and spend more time adding piccies. :o)))
Love James & Erin
