Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

THURSDAY 26TH FEBRUARY Here I am sitting in another airport terminal, reflecting on another adventure over. Mexico was fantastic! We met so many fantastic people and did some really cool stuff. This trip was supposed to be just one big layover, but ended up being a bit of a blowout! The cheap food and beer was too much of a temptation so indulging was very easy. The $2 beers were cold and were sold wherever you went, so they were in my hand more than I would have liked, but whatever….. I almost feel like I’m going back to work for [View Full Entry]

Well i ended up spending 6 days in tulum much longer than i expected but it was a good place to chill out. One day a few of us got a lift of this american couple, pam and steve! to a cenote, its like a lake and we borrowed some snorkeling gear. Then they took us back to the beach where i saw the turtles so we went there again. Very kind of them may have to revise my thoughts on the old USA. At night watched Mexcio get tanked of the USA at footy, erickson was in charge its incredible [View Full Entry]

Well, I am back in North America! Mexico anyways :) December 31st turned out to be a beautiful day, and I really enjoyed spending it with Megan. We had lunch at a cute cafe south of the hostel, enjoying the two-for-one special on the pina coladas ;) After we got our errands done and had lunch, we headed off in search of the Cake Lady. The Cake Lady is this marvellous woman who bakes cakes in the morning, and sells them from a push cart in the afternoon and early evening. She makes all kinds of cakes and pies - key [View Full Entry]

The flight to Cancun was uneventful, we filled up two forms on the plane customs and immigration cards, with strict instructions from the crew that if we lose them we pay $50 for a new one, so i was careful not to misplace it. The immigration in Cancun is very quick, it was customs that took time. From there i bought a shuttle bus ticket to downtown bus station then crossed the street of the bus station and waited for buses that has a sign going to Punta Juarez where I can catch a freey to Isla Mujeres. The kind driver [View Full Entry]

After reading rave reviews about the Candelaria Hostel we got there to find it had been closed down a few weeks ago. Still Hotel Lili had a treat - a cable TV, and shit though it is, MTV scores highly when deprived of such creature comforts. Following a further reccommendation from the Rough Guide we went to the King of Baseball's bike rental shop and waited for evidence of his 'insatiable character'. Antońio 'Negro' Aguilar had a certian sort of gruff charm..'you break bike; you pay. You lose key; you pay'. He soon loosened up when we asked him his baseball [View Full Entry]

Valladolid, 13-01-1990. I have no complaints of the busses in Mexico so far. It took us three hours by air-conditioned bus to Valladolid, nice bus with reclinig seats and a sober chofer. We had heard stories back home in Amsterdam about all mexican drivers always being drunk and practising macho driving especially when there are gringos on board, not so far. Valladolid seems a pretty enough city but we are mostly here because of Valldolid's proximity to the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza. Since we live on a pretty tight budget we spent our evenings sitting outside and drinking beer [View Full Entry]

Arriving in Valladolid at night, we fell victim to its inhabitants’ amiability. Everyone was eager to tell us where the hotel was, even when they had no idea. Dawn revealed a modest town more or less built on a grid system, and the fact that we had unwittingly passed our accommodation by about five times the night before. Ostensibly chosen for its proximity to the Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá, Yucatán’s Valladolid was really serving as a surrogate hometown for Raúl, unable to spend the holidays in his own Valladolid thousands of miles away in Spain. The relaxed colonial town is [View Full Entry]

We took a second class bus to Coba, standing all the way. At Coba we tried the only budget hotel in town. It was acceptable for P$250 (US$24) so we decided to stay. We had a lovely breakfast in the restaurant and headed off to the archaeological site. It was a quick walk. Going past the lake we saw a man feeding a rather large crocodile. We started down the pier but when he said it would be P$10 each to see the croc we turned around. There were only a few small tourist vans in the car park when we [View Full Entry]

Hey up once again! I'm not gonna be writing much this time as I've written plenty over the last few blogs. Basically we headed from Tulum to Valladolid which is a small town in the central Yucatan so I was striking distance from my main Mexico "must see" of Chichen Itza and also the local Ek Balam Maya Ruins. We stayed at a great hotel on the zocalo called Hotel Maria De Luz which had its own swimming pool and a great little restaurant that served regional and generic Mexican dishes at real decent prices - beats Tulum's inflated beach prices [View Full Entry]
