From the hurricane .. on to Mérida. After not having electricity and propper food for two days, we decided to take it real easy and relax. This was to be our last propper city stop, before a week long tour of the Carribean beaches of Mexico.
Merida hostel turned out to be an allright place, but with a LOT of mosquitos. Merida is actually a pretty big place (size of Copenhagen), laid out in a grid, so all streets are numbered (e.g.: we lived on the corner of street 60 and street 59). The streets are narrow and charming, although it seems to be a mekka of shopping and dining, so if you happen to talk to a mexican, he will show you a great place to buy ___ in a few minutes.
Next day we did Chichen Itzá, one of the
new wonders of the world.
The place was pretty fancy, very nicely rebuilt and ofcourse the vendors of all things imaginable, for
just one peso, for you my friend. The big ball court of the Mayas was actually more impressive to me, although it was hard to enjoy anything thoroughly, due to the super-heat. Our tour-driver (a
HutsAway from cities, some people still live in these cute huts
better one this time), also took us to a hotel-resort cenote (big natural pool) which we had to try out, nice and cold. That meant that now we are officially toured-out! No more tours, just beach, sun and hopefully some nice people.
Later we went out to see a movie, Vacancy, with our closest experience of being abducted by a big rocker taxi driver. He turned out allright, just took us for a longer ride, making those pesos. The collectivo on our way back was fun and local :) .. 75 pesos for taxi, 5 peso for collectivo ..
Hope you are all well, next time: Tulum.
