Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

I'm sure part 1 sent you into deep depression as your empathy and sympathy for our well being brought you to near tears. Part 2 is light hearted, cheerful, fun, and full of the same BS you've come to expect. Right now I'm lounging in a hammock by the Doris Albino pool filled with attractive bikini clad females. OK there's a 4 year old with a look of relief on her face and a yellow wave drifting away. Back in Cancun our eco friendly hotel, the Del Ray Caribbean, used composting/an open air garbage pit, gray water recycling/the sink and [View Full Entry]

To get started I'd like to add a few photos from Linda's and my trip to the Yucatan several years ago. I loved it there. The Myan ruins are some of the most impressive that I've seen anywhere, including Italy and Greece. Chichen Itza is a must see. There'll be guys hanging around that you can pay to be your personal guide. This is worth doing. They'll be your buddy for a few hours, and they are generally knowledgeable about the ruins, and Myan history. I was also impressed with the ruins at Uzmal. I love Mexico. The people are [View Full Entry]

Chichen Itza Getting there We paid for a transportation package thinking that the entrance fee was also included to Chichen Itza, but upon arrival, we discovered that it was not.... lesson: always read the fine print! At the entrance, there were many vendors selling hats and we soon learnt why, because the heat at the grounds was exceptionally hot to the point of unbearable for some. We joined an American group for an English tour and an elderly lady in their group had to sit down under a tree and miss the tour due to the searing sun. Due to the [View Full Entry]

7th MAY 2009 - CHICHEN ITZA RUINS!! NOW I KNOW WHERE QUIDDITCH COMES FROM!! I woke up at around 7am and went straight to the net for an hour whilst it was free. Nat must have got up at the crack of dawn as she was already on when I got there. We searched for details of a hostel in Cancun for when we arrived later that day. Trying to be prepared and not get caught short like in recent days. At around 8ish we had some breakfast, packed up our bags and checked out. The walk to the 1st class [View Full Entry]
