As I head west, leaving a trail of mango peels, tequila bottles and broken hearts in my wake, I reflect again on the idea of permanence and putting down roots. I genuinely feel like I'd have been happy marrying the girl in Malpasito who drove me into a love trance, and living the rest of my days in an obscure poblito leading a humble, simple and proud life with 2-13 babies. But there's always this force telling me to go. So I go. I spent the night in the car somewhere in the Oaxaca mountains and almost ran out of gas. Also, she overheated for the sixth time, but fortunately I had the foresight to carry a bottle of water for the radiator with me. The Google estimate of driving times continues to be consistently inconsistent; ... read more

My time at Aguaselva is coming to an end and I shed tears for mixed emotions. I'm sad to leave my first Mexican family but I'm excited to see some good friends soon. June will be eventful, as I plan to make my way through a few places I want to see on the way west over the period of a week. I'm evaluating the route for safety, efficiency and destinations. Then at the end of June, I'll fly back to Ohio for not one but TWO weddings. Love love love! Then I have no fucking clue where my life is going, I haven't gotten that far. I'll miss my best buddy next door who helped me out with getting my car fixed, finding tools, buying weed, learning Spanish, talking to women and so much more, ... read more

"Don't sweat the bullshit," is a simple phrase that carries a heavy meaning. If you allow yourself to become agitated by something small like spilling some boogers on your tortilla, or something large like falling face-first into a wood chipper, you're choosing to be bothered. It's all in the mind. And the collective mind here is tranquilo. Today I woke up with a very profound life decision: should I clean the bathrooms or varnish the bed-frames first? This is an example of why I love it here. Simple. Most days I find myself getting out of bed with a brain already full of words/expressions/tenses that I need to look up, things that I thought of in those few seconds or hours (depending on your lifestyle) between waking up and getting up. I usually end up with ... read more

There are many different levels of familiarity and different slang personal pronouns to reflect it: amigo, compa, we, cabron, vato, seniora, pinche, dingus. I love the use of the suffix -ita/-ito, which refers to small things and cute things. You hear seniorita but never seniorito. Because girls are cute. Malpasito is a small village next to nearby Malpaso. You can order a chela, or a chelita, if you want to be cute about it. At least that's my interpretation. Phrases like, "I give up," "does that ring a bell?" "cold shoulder," and, "I'll look after you," come to mind when I'm thinking of linguistic and idiomatic silliness. I now notice some grammatical errors that my translator app makes, which means I'M IMPROVING :) This is very rewarding. Let's talk about the weather. Still hot as shit. ... read more

The first full sentence I understood from the lady who feeds me is "Neil es tranquilo." This makes me very happy. Earlier this year when I was in Mississippi, my uncle gave me some good advice. He ensured me that I need to be prepared to be laughed at/with when I attempt speak in the native language. People laugh at me all the fucking time. It's usually impossible for me to know if I'm being laughed "with" or laughed "at" or something in between. Or maybe their spectrum of humor is on a different dimension. Doesn't matter I guess, laughter is always a good thing. Except if you're laughing at, like... war. I was thinking about the fact that men in all cultures tend to be less formal, more crass, and use more slang words and ... read more

"Look what a terrible mess that we've made, The sun beats us down as we search for the shade, Yes it is true death is everyone's fate, But we've made it this far, it's time to celebrate." -Zero 7 It's almost worth getting a sunburn on your whole back to roll around in a hammock when the burn is itchy and mostly healed. The satisfaction is otherworldly. Como se dice "backgasm?" If I'd known before now that, in the same day, I'd paddle out into a lake on a longboat and spearfish for dinner with the hombres, as well as play harmonica and guitar with the local children AND do handstands and yoga with them AND paint with them, then I'd... ummmm... probably be like... uhhh... "I'm looking forward to this day." I've brought the following ... read more

"Oh that magic feeling... nowhere to go." -The Beatles I used a leaf blower for a few hours the other day for the first time (insert stereotypical Mexican joke). I enjoyed it, it's like painting the ground clear. It's been raining almost non-stop for three days with no sun: an abrupt change. I'm putting on actual non-sandal-shoes because of this for the first time in months. I feel mixed emotions about it. It's very rewarding the first few times you intentionally make someone laugh in their own language, even if it's something stupid. Sometimes it's nice to laugh with someone about a dog's boner or farts, even if we can barely speak to each other. It's also fun to tenuously describe with verbage and pantomime the act of performing oral sex on a woman. I explained ... read more

"Familiarity breeds contempt, absence makes he heart grow fonder, and other meaningful shit that applies to my life right now." -Anonymous A frog in my bedroom: that's the latest news. We're married after meeting only 10 minutes ago. I try to be amphibious in my life and I think that's where the attraction began. Plus she showed up in my bedroom so it's a no-brainer... or "he" I'm not sure. I got the car fixed with Antonio's help; he talked to the mechanic for me and helped me find hose clamps. Total cost including parts was under $20 USD. Awesome. I fucking love people. The heat is still insane. Tabasco is dubbed "The Green Hell," I'm told. I've had two car problems so far in Malpasito, and I can't be more grateful that they happened here and not at some random spot on the road. The nearest mechanic is ten miles away in Heradura, but I'm getting familiar with the people, and I don't have anywhere I have to be. So if it doesn't get fixed today, there's always manana. We got a flat tire on the way back from the most recent trip to Huimanguillo. It took us two very careful trips to Heradura riding on the donut. Plugging the hole didn't work, so another guy patched the same spot and problem solved... until I blast into another invisible pothole. These Mexican roads can be unforgiving. The car overheated a week ago in the middle of the night, and two drunk guys ... read more

We made it! It was a long day but we're here in one piece. No troubles at all other than a Campeche State cop who bitched us out for not having our dogs in cages. He said it was a state law that all dogs in vehicles must be in cages. He gave us a nasty look and then let us go though so all is ok. There must be something about our van because every time we went through any type of checkpoint...police or military, we were stopped. We love the cabin we are in, nice big secure yard for the dogs to run in. It is a two cabin property but no one is in the other cabin so we have it to ourselves. There's a nice open-air, traditional cocina next door so Jill ... read more
