This morning I awoke with excruciating back pain. We both decided that it would be a good idea to go and see the doctor just to ensure that everything was ok. The consultation would normally cost US$100, however I was able to get a free consultation courtesy of pregnant woman hormones followed by the waterworks for good measure. They assured me it was just muscular and sent me on my way with some dencorub! That’s right Michelle - the all too familiar bootcamp smell reared its ugly head…
Today we arrived in Mazatlan. Geographically, the city is only 8hrs by car from Puerto Vallarta, but all night and half the morning by ship. Due to the injuries, we had a quiet day. The town itself was gorgeous and reminded me of Spain and Greece. The buildings were brightly coloured and the town itself was surrounded by water.
For those who have visited anywhere in Asia, Mexico is very similar in a sense that the second you arrive on the shore there are a million people hassling you to do something, buy something or just generally annoying you. Steve was getting angry at me because I felt obliged to respond
to each and every request with a ‘No thank you!’.
From the ship we could see the main tourist attractions, including the Cathedral and City Hall and it looked relatively close, but when its 35 degrees and 5km, it really isn’t close at all. I yelled at Steve NUMEROUS times about the importance of taxis but he insists that you see more when you walk. Whilst I do not disagree with that theory, I was also completely over walking (espec with a sore back!)… We eventually got to the beach had a bit of a look around - espec the history of Mazatlan and its independence in 1910 (see the nude statues and dolphins) - bought some bottled water for the remainder of the trip and headed back BY TAXI to the ship.
So far in two days we have seen two really different sides of Mexico. The rainforests and old school Puerto Vallarto and the beautiful seaside town which was Mazatlan.
Tomorrow we go to Cabo San Lucas and don’t really know what to expect. It will be interesting to see what it brings…
