The town of Tulum is nothing spectacular - we came for the beaches! We arrived in Tulum and were pleased to find that our hostel assigned us practically our own flat, a room in a different building than the hostel, in an apartment-type arrangement. We had fun listening to music (the cherubs have speakers and great taste in music), playing cards, and drinking rum. We also had a great time cooking food for ourselves, as we had a kitchen in our building and a bigger one at the hostel. Making food for four people is so much easier than for two. And much more fun! We ate guacamole, bruschetta, pasta and beers. The pasta was successful 50% of the time. One eventful dinner night, when we all were (of course) very hungry, we made a giant ... read more

Tim Version: * Whiled away about 5 days in Tulum, beautiful perfect uncrowded golden sand beaches, tourquise warm caribbean water, and happy people. * Checked out the chilled beachside Tulum ruins, tiny but pretty, and the Coba ruins too with another good tall temple to climb. The chilled out beachside carribean version: When even the ruins you visit have private beach access to pristine clear beautiful carribean waters with views of the coast worth millions, you know you're in a good place! Tulum, not too crowded and not yet big enough to be spoilt. Its a gem. Staying here about 5 days was all too easy, and I had to really remind myself at the end that there is more of Mexico to see. One thing however did help, and helped me mentaly figure out more ... read more

Feliz Ano nuevo!

Tulum is one of those places that appear on the outside to be all about the hotels, the bars and the expensive restaurants. Discovering the real treasures means going underground and getting into the water. After traipsing around looking for a hostel free from bedbugs, we scored with Posada los Mapaches. The four-bed dorm was nicely furnished, the mattresses were ideally firm with fresh smelling sheets, a flower and a candy left ready for the next guest. Breakfast was included and could have come from a five star hotel, the fruit salad was a work of art and was followed by delicious Mexican staples like burritos and the obligatory ration of refried beans. Guests are issued with their own bike, mine was the coolest ever, a retro Schwinn..I want one of these when I get home! ... read more

Without hanging around we left Cancun after a good nights rest and a cheap feast at a food stall. We got our first bus of the trip to Tulum, a sleepy town near the coast with fantastic beaches and a some pretty mayan ruins set on top of cliffs over the sea, very spectacular. We stayed in a little beach hut with nothing other than a bed with mosquito net in and spent most of our time here walking, to ruins, along the beach, to the shop etc., as it was cheaper than a taxi (although much hotter and longer). We are now about to catch a bus to Belize, or a few buses as the case may be, to try out some of the beaches there. ... read more

Rano zacina velmi prijemne. Dostavaji snidani a my se presunujeme k jeskyni.

Well the heatwave in Mexico was showing no signs of easing, but we kinda hoped that we would get some more of a sea breeze in Tulum. Rented a 'Dodge' car in Playa for 4 days, worked out at 10 dollars each a day so was fairly cheap. Terry decided he would be the designated driver-we'll talk more about that later...anyway the car had air conditioning so that was all that mattered. In fact for the next few days all we wanted to do was to sit in the car with the a/c on full blast! Headed south of Playa to Tulum..the town is about 4km from the ruins and the beach so there are lots of 'cabaƱas' or wooden huts along the beach where you can stay, the beach near the ruins is really beautiful ... read more

The town of Tulum itself is not very pretty, but it is lively. It's got several restaurants and shops lined up all along the town's main avenue, with a few bars too. People walk up and down the avenue to check out the shops, eat on tables set up by the sidewalk, others chill at open-air bars. The town has a good ambiance. I got to celebrate Mexico's Independence Day with real Mexicans! They had a festival where performers danced and sang. There were stands with food...sabroso! These folks know how to par-tey . After the festival, I headed to a local bar where there was a rock band playing. They were cool. People were all dancing and sort of half-ass moshing. Regardless, it was fun. The caribbean beaches in Tulum are awesome! I've never felt ... read more
