Refreshing waters
The waters on the north beach are stilling crystal clear, and perfect temperature ... but I'll say it for the 100th time, still not as good as Tulum and Cancun :(
Today we decided to be like normal people. We would actually stay in one place for the whole day! The place was a deck chair on the north beach of Isla Mujeres. Thanks to the wonders of digital media, our 2 year old was left to entertain herself with hours of Sesame Street on the laptop, while we blissfully ignored the world around us.
Alas, staying in one place turned out to be too difficult even for one day. So by lunch time, we decided we had had enough of snoozing, and decided to go snorkelling. There are meant to be great reefs around Isla Mujeres, so we hired a boat and guide, and away we went. It was unfortunately a really windy day, and the guide advised against going out to the further reefs as the waters would be choppy. But heck, we were there for one day, and we had paid our money, so we were going to that reef.
Unfortunately our two-year old didn't enjoy that trip. It was 20 minutes of "no more boat!", tears and squealing as we were bumped, buffeted and jolted. We felt like 'wonderful' parents, and I'm sure the guide thought

Horchata
A delicious milky sweet rice drink. Must try when in Mexico.
that we were too ;)
Finally we got to the snorkeling site, and took turns paddling around. The water at the snorkeling site was actually quite still, but nevertheless, we saw very few fish. It was still an enjoyable experience, but compared to some of the other places we've snorkelled, it definitely goes in the 'suitable for old people with too much money that need to do something easy to make them feel young' bucket, rather than a great experience. I also think the boat didn't give us our full time at the spot, though he was trying to hurry us along to save us from the worsening weather.
After that, it was back to the beach for a bit more snoozing (and a bit more sesame street for the kid - its amazing how many times she can watch the same video without getting bored!) - okay, we weren't that bad, we did play with her!
Dinner that night was at a little restaurant overlooking the water on the northwest corner of the island. We were the only customers, which made us feel a bit aprehensive, but once we saw the food, we knew we had

Playing on the beach
This is how Thambiratnam kids play on the beach because they aren't allowed in the sun because they will get sun burnt and dark. Instead, they watch TV and stay out of mum & dad's hair. Okay, we aren't that mean!
made the right choice. Best for the night was Horchata, a milky sweet rice drink that was really refreshing. We also had semi-chimichanged-tacos which were just as great. As a reward for her great behaviour, the two-year old got a massive bowl of ice-cream, which thus qualified her to be a true american child - watched TV all day and ate junk food at night.
That night we left Isla Mujeres to head back to the mainland to catch a bus to Guatemala (via Chetumal). The bus was really nice, much better than we had expected. We boarded just before midnight and slept the night on the bus.
