Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

We took the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. We didn't plan at all for this trip and found ourselves walking along the main street. I thought the island was small enough that we could walk to the other side, but that was not the case. A young boy on the side of the ride informed us that it could take almost 2 hours. He also informed us that taxi's on Cozumel were very expensive as well. Some taxi's charged $35 one way, but we were lucky to find a one for less. He took us to an very isolated [View Full Entry]

Another day.....

Today we're back in Cozumel, the port for parties and play. Though we're still taking it easy with the partying. Until next week. For my last cruise, the plan is for the whole group of us to go back to Park Royale so I can have one last day in the sun with friends and unlimited daquiris! Oh that'll be good. But today was good too. I went first to No Name Bar, the bar for crew by crew for a drink, some food and friends. Really I just needed the drink and I'll get to why in a moment. Took another easy day today. While Cozumel is our preferred port to party in - it’s just so easy here - last week there was some drama with some crew getting back on the ship late and visibly intoxicated. While it seems like everyone drinks all the time (and well, many do), we’re actually only allowed to have a very low percentage of alcohol in our blood while on the ship, even when off duty. If you’re caught visibly drunk, you can be tested and if your levels are higher than what is permitted you can be fired. These friends from [View Full Entry]

Today we're back in Cozumel. I first went downtown with Bronwyn and Jackie, two girls from the spa, to see and support them in getting tattoos. It was pretty cool to see them get them done. I really adore those two girls. They're sweethearts and so much fun. After the tattoo parlous, we went back to our beloved Park Royale. There was a big group of people today - lots of spa staff, some shoppies, dancers, musicians. It was more of what is becoming our Park Royale standard - drinking, sunning, swimming, eating good food, laughing, playing. It was both wild [View Full Entry]

I often say, “ The Eagle has landed”, whenever I land from a flight - well now I mean it. That’s right poppets, Brooks went Sky Diving. I decided that I wanted to do something that was so extreme and so memorable that I couldn’t resist. And then the thought came to me. SKY DIVING. Why not!! I had been talking about wanting to go sky diving for some time with my friends on the ship but never actually thought I could get the nerve to go. When I was at Star Centre, Jeanette and Marlize went, and when I [View Full Entry]

Today in Cozumel, a group of us went back to Park Royale, the resort we went to last week. A complete mix of people from all different departments on the ship. $40 for all you can eat and drink creates quite the party. All day daiquiris and being in Mexico, inevitably there is tequila. It was rather crazy but so so so much fun. Not much to say. Just fun pictures to share. [View Full Entry]

There’s no place like home. All great things must come to and end, isn’t that the saying??? Well I want to say that that isn’t true. My contract with Carnival is over in a few days and I want to take this time to thank a few key people and reflect a little. I have seen and done some amazing things over the last six months. Be it, walking through the French influenced downtown of Martinique, sneaking into exotic resorts, hitting up the Boat Yard with fellow crew in Barbados, going on tours with the Tour Guide or be it lounging [View Full Entry]

When Marlize and I got back to Cozumel after our sky diving adventure, all I wanted to do was be out in the sunshine on a beach. I knew a group of people were going to Park Royal, a resort just outside of Cozumel. So I hopped in a taxi and went there. The resort is so nice - right on the beach, with a beautiful pool, pool side bars, a restaurant, snack stands. For $40 you have full use of the facilities and unlimited food and drinks, an amazing price for a full day! I only had a few hours [View Full Entry]

First time taking a cruise to the Carribean with stops in Mexico (Progreso, Yucatan ; Cozumel) and Belize (Belize city). Progresso is an emerging gateway for cruise ship passengers where guests can take excursions to Maya ruin or Merida (25 miles away). Strategically located along the Gulf Coast of Mexico, Progreso is the state capital of the Yucatan, founded in 1871 by Juan Miguel Castro and heavily influenced by the Mayan culture. Took a walk at the market and then joined others for a tour to a Maya ruin and a visit to Merida. I didn't book the tour on the [View Full Entry]
