Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

Spring break is still upon me here on the ship. 300 teens - and my participation rates have been around 80% so I am intensely busy. Which also means, of course, teen tours are still running. Today in Cozumel, I ran my third teen tour in the last 10 days! I took a group of five teens to the adventure park for an afternoon of high ropes and snorkeling. The group was really fun; we enjoyed the day greatly. For the first half of our tour, we were suited up in safety gear. There was a whole team of guides working [View Full Entry]

Kane and I wanted to go snorkeling in Cozumel and were getting ready to head to the port when we found that some Germans at the hostel had the same idea, so Sarah, Elisa, Kane, and I all went as a group. The ferry ride was about an hour long and it took us to the main city on the island. We walked through a little part of town and bought some water and snacks while we tried to decide where we were heading for snorkeling. We decided on a beach that was less crowded, as we heard that there are [View Full Entry]

Went with Timmy, Kane, Jodie, Mariam, Arscott, Mats, Morris, and Har Har. How was it? Relaxing & Ridiculous. We stayed in a private Villa about 10min outside of down town on the southwest side of the island. Had our own pool, dock, and (very key) hammock. Spent a lot of time in the Villa, but also went into town to eat and drink, but Cozumel is mainly a Scuba diving and Cruise line town so it was pretty dead at night. Really safe place, especially for mexico. Managed to get 3 dives in. First 2 were boat dives with Tim and [View Full Entry]

If you get seasick, take your dramamine and then head to Cozumel for a day of walking, biking and snorkeling. The only thin We did wrong was step 1 of these instructions. After the ferry ride to Cozumel, it took me a good hour to overcome the seasickness I got from the ride. During that time Fred found us a spot for lunch, bikes to ride and did recon on the snorkeling. I got to sit and feel nauseous then as I felt better, watch iguanas fall from the tree next to me. We had lunch at Cafe Denis (sounded like [View Full Entry]

We finally found paradise in Mexico! Cozumel is what we were looking for in a beach vacation but hadnīt known it. The main square around the ferry terminal is just the same as 5th ave in Playa - crowded with tourists and vendors, but we went towards the south part of the island - about half way down the coast road - to a little place called Playa Corona. You will see from the pictures that it is not a beautiful white sand beach - instead it is rocky and full of coral. There is a little beach bar that has [View Full Entry]

Just got back from an amazing trip to Cozumel. We headed down for a long weekend so I could scuba dive in open water for the very first time! The newness of being underwater and seeing the ocean life all around me was enough to make me forget that I should be scared. Much gratitude to my dive companion, whose confidence and patience kept me calm, and who showed me my very first live seahorse outside of an aquarium. (I'll never buy a dried up husk of a seahorse souvenir ever again!) All underwater photo credits go to him as well [View Full Entry]

Quintana Roooooooo!! Captains Log - 09/11/08 So onwards on American Airlines (really crappy airline do not fly with them) with some French family from the Alsace who's kid was wearing a weird head brace to rounden (to make round) his head - strange looking contraption, never seen one of those before but at least he didn't cry on the plane! So they let us into Mexico - Marcel had a lighter in his pocket too (goddammit he could set the seats alight!) With a hop and a skip from Cancun on coach and ferry to Cozumel, we arrived the apartment Nivea [View Full Entry]

Carnival
The dreaded ship.
When I ported Cozumel, a frightful image appeared at a distance....a Carnival cruise liner. Oh no! (I thought) Sure enough...as I walked to my hostel, nothing but fat Americans were roaming the streets (probably looking for cheeseburgers and Bud Light). It's ok I thought, they'll probably just be here for a day or so. I got settled, showered and went out to look for a bite to eat and a beer (cheeseburger and Bud Light). After I ate, I roamed some local bars, but they were dead....looked boring. Let me begin by saying that drinking by yourself sort of sucks sometimes. [View Full Entry]

We FINALLY spent 5 days in Cozumel, Mexico. And most of you know why I say finally. Well, if you don't it's because there was a hurricane on our first attempt and a family emergency the second. So this was going to be our third and final attempt. But it worked out! We stayed at the Wyndham Cozumel and loved it. The Mexican people were some of the most friendly and accommodating we have experienced. Even though our hotel was all inclusive, we didn't spend that much time there. We went to Chichen Itza, and Tulum and then rented a Jeep [View Full Entry]

We took the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. We didn't plan at all for this trip and found ourselves walking along the main street. I thought the island was small enough that we could walk to the other side, but that was not the case. A young boy on the side of the ride informed us that it could take almost 2 hours. He also informed us that taxi's on Cozumel were very expensive as well. Some taxi's charged $35 one way, but we were lucky to find a one for less. He took us to an very isolated [View Full Entry]
