10th MAY 2009 - HANGING AT THE BEACH & SALSA SQUARE!!
Woke up early again this morning and relaxed in bed reading until I heard Nat stir at about 8.30. Up and out at 8.30am.....on a Sunday!! We wandered to a nearby supermarket to buy some stuff for breakfast and then headed back to the hostel to eat it. Once eaten, we decided to act like it was Sunday and so we lazed around the hostel for a couple of hours reading and journal writing. Weird when travelling…weekends just seem like any other day and you don’t look forward to them in the same way at all! I am sure I will appreciate them a lot more once I am back into the swing of work again!
Just after lunch we headed out and strolled along the beach front towards the beach. Loads of cool statues along the front which made the place look nice. The beach wasn’t the best as it was quite pebbly but the sea was gorgeous. One of the nicest seas I had swam in as it was so calm and clear. It was more of a local beach than a tourist one but we set
up our towels in the sun anyway and laid out. We did look out of place. The rest of the people on the beach were Mexican and either sat in the shade or chilling in the sea with beers (kids and adults alike). We got in the sea for a good few dips too as it was too hot not to and it looked so inviting. Other than that, Nat sunbathed and slept whilst I read my book. A couple of Mexican guys came over and asked to take our photos. We said no as we just wanted some peace and didn’t fancy random men having photo of us. I thought it really weird for them to even want photos but Nat made a good point; we looked odd to them. We rocked up with blonde hair, pale skin and bikinis on. Every single other person in the area was dark skinned, dark haired and they all sat in the shade and wore t-shirts. It was like 2 Mexicans rocking up to our town in matador outfits and sombreros…we would take photos!! I still didn’t like it though and declined anyway!!
Once beached out we headed back to the
town area. Most things were closed as it was Mothers Day so we made our way back to the hostel. So excited for a shower as my hair made Worzel Gummage’s look soft and radiant!! My hairdresser has got her work cut out when I get home! Once showered and sorted, we wrote our journals and then went out for tea at about 7ish. After finishing our meals we noticed that music was playing in the square and a few people were gathered. It turned out that it was Salsa night. There were only a few people on the dance floor to begin with; an old couple and 2 solo dancers, one of which fancied himself as a Michael Jackson wanabee!! He kept doing his own version of the moonwalk and low spins. Very funny and entertaining to watch! He really owned the floor though I am not sure he was really doing salsa! Another guy was just drunk and he performed what could only be described as a stumble numerous times. Brilliant! The floor got busier as time went on though Michael Jackson remained the star of the show. Mums used their small children as excuses to get up
and dance. Men seemed to need the toilet far more than usual as they used any excuse to escape the dance floor. The oldies were the best…so funny to see two 70 year olds shaking their booties better than the youngsters! 2 drunk Mexicans tried to drag us up too but we declined. Too intimidated by Michaels moves…that’s my excuse anyway and I am sticking to it!
Once we had seen enough Salsa and were transfixed by Michael no more, we headed back to the hostel and went to bed. We were leaving Cozumel and moving on again the following day! No rest for the wicked!!
11th MAY 2009 - GOODBYE COZUMEL!!
We got up at around 7am as we had to catch the ferry at 9am and had a fair bit to do. As I was getting ready a random American guy (Phillip) began chatting to me. We spoke about our trip and exchanged the usual pleasantries. We told him of our plans to go to Tulum and he told me of his to go to Belize. We parted ways and I never thought anymore about it…usual traveler conversation! Nat and I went to have breakfast
and then packed up the rest of our stuff. We couldn’t get to the internet to check out hostels in Tulum and so used our fallback plan to just rock up! Never failed before!!
At 9am we went to catch the ferry and filled in the usual pig flu check form as well as being laser checked. Finally worked out that it takes your temperature…now it makes sense!! Catching out all the porky pie tellers who lie on the pig flu form…clever!! We then boarded the ferry and took a pew outside on the deck. Phillip (the American from that morning) got on and came and squeezed himself onto our bench. It really was a squeeze too as he was a big big guy!! He literally had a sack of fruit with him and munched his way through about 15 pieces one after the other. I know fruit is good for you but 15 pieces straight up…wow!! Without prompting he explained that he tried to be healthy. Considering that he was about 30 stone I think he had a different understanding of healthy to me! He began chatting to us as the ferry left and told us that he
had decided to change his plans and got to Tulum for a couple of days before heading on to Belize!! Ooh goody…looked like he had changed his plans to match ours! I can’t say I was filled with excitement at spending more time with him as he was definitely a small dose guy! As we arrived back in Playa De Carmen we left the ferry and headed for the bus station to book on the next bus heading to Tulum. Phillip stuck with us and spoke to us like we were life long buddies and were all now travelling as a three. Nat and I exchanged glances and we both understood one another well...we had to lose this guy when we got to Tulum and fast!!
