So, the plan was to head down to Tulum for the day. Last year we toured the ruins without hiring a guide and really didn't get much out of the experience other than a breath taking view. This year we want to get there right as they open, hire a guide, and make the most it then head over to one of the beach clubs. When I woke up I noticed that the winds were down and the bay was much calmer than the previous couple of days. A perfect day to get Aidan out to snorkel. We moved the Tulum plans to Friday but still made the journey down there to reprovision at the San Francisco grocery. On the way back we took a detour through Pueblo Akumal. It was about the time when the ninos were heading to school and they looked so sweet in their uniforms. Life on this side of Highway 307 is a far cry from the living standards on the beach. It seems to weird to think with all the wealth that visits the area and "1st world" standard of living doesn't roll over the other side of the highway. I imagine with the completion
of the bridge connecting the Pueblo and the beach side there will be improvement made. It will be worth watching over the next couple of years to see how the Pueblo changes.
Back to the condo and time to set up for a lazy day lounging around. Life is sure tough! Sean and I went out snorkeling while Aidan and his friends from Utah worked on their masterpiece in the sand. Sean decided the area he wanted to snorkel out to which is where he has been seeing turtles pop their heads up out of the water all week. So off we go....unfortunately no turtle sighting but we did see a huge ray hiding in the sand. I am still a chicken when it comes to investigating underwater life. Once I saw it I had a little panic attack and swam as fast a possible away from the ray. Irrational fear I know!
Back to the beach chair for another round of intensive do-nothing and then time for a healthy American lunch of hot dogs and chips. Then out to the little dive shop down the road to purchase Aidan a new snorkel so he will come and
join us. Once we returned we headed out for some more snorkeling. This time we just swam straight out from our building and the boys saw their first turtle. Unfortunately I missed this sighting...maybe next time! Sean came over and grabbed me to follow him to a reef area where he pointed out a tail peeking out from underneath. Then he looks at me and says "shark?". Okay, I have already established that I have an irrational fear of some sealife(rays, sharks, octopus, etc) so I am starting to wonder why in the heck my husband would bring me over to what he thinks is a shark!!! Exit strategy????hmmmm Well, it sure did look like a shark tale, from the quick glance I gave before I swam away. I didn't realize I could swim that fast!! Now, I don't know exactly what it was so I don't want to be one to start the rumor of sharks in Half Moon Bay, but my hubby swears that it was... Needless to say, we ended that session of snorkeling soon after that. It was time to head back to the chairs and have a Sol anyway!
We tie up our exhausting
day of doing nothing around 4:30ish. At around 5:50pm my husband has a wonderful idea " Let's hit the last 1/2 hour of happy hour at Lol Ha". So off we go, which rarely happens that we can get an go so quick! We get to the parking lot and Sean realizes he left his wallet and money back at the condo! So much for a quick trip to finish out happy hour....Aidan and I are sent in by Sean to get our happy hour round of drinks ordered while he heads back to the condo for money. Again, I am wondering if this another attempt at an "exit strategy" hehehe. By the time the waiter brought our drinks Sean comes strolling into Lol Ha. I didn't think you could drive these roads, speed bumps and all, that fast...I suspect the suspension on the rental car will never be the same! Enjoyed a couple of drinks at Lol Ha and then it was off to be entertained at La Buena Vida's karaoke night.
Please note that where we live you don't just get up and sing karaoke. With all of the talented songwriters and singers in Nashville, you don't
put yourself out there unless you can trully sing. Well, that certainly was not the case at LBV. We had a great time watching people create their own versions of some of the old standards. American Idol needs to check out this karaoke night for their first round contestants. Luckily, we didn't stay long enough for me to get enough liquid courage to join in the fun. A little Pat Benetar Hit Me With Your Best Shot would have brought the house down!! We called it a night around 10ish as we had to get up early the next morning for our big fishing trip with Enrique.
